Children on Klonipin

My son is 5 and has a friend who is the same age.  He came to sleep over and with him came a pill box.  His mother explained to me that he's on Klonopin, and a couple other things, I forget which...and that she gives it to her 5 year old and 3 year old to help them sleep.  She had like 4 different pills to give him.  I didn't feel comfortable giving him any, so I didn't.  Now, being more aware of withdrawls, I maybe shouldn't have made that call, but it just doesn't seem right to me giving such young children heavy drugs...  She's always complaining about them being too hyper, but I always think their great-I don't know.....just curious to what you all think about it.....

No, they're aren't any schools that are relatively close. The thing is, I have told my kids the exact same thing, don't resort to violence, but do not stand there and let someone treat you like ****. Stand up for yourself, and sorry, but by all means, if someone hits you, you have every right to fight back and protect yourself. I tell them not to ever hit first, but I was so angry that the other child was not in any trouble. I am in a way excited for this meeting, but dreading it at the same time, ya know?!?!?!

They were not having seizures...I know it.  ok, now I'm just flat out sad.  ;(  I really like these kids.  He only slept over once, and I didn't give him any of the drugs, and I told her I didn't.  And I told her why, I said I wasn't comfortable giving him all these pills.  I'm kinda sick to my stomach now.  They used to live in another state, and for some reason I think she had them prescribed before they left there....and still gets them..I just texted her in a non shalont way....I'm going to see what he's all on....hopefully she doesn't ever come on here. I doubt it.

OMG>>>>Those young children should not be on those drugs...that is SCARY!!!
I don't know what to do...but that isn't right...
I would talk to the mother and if they aren't prescribed..tell her these are a controlled substance and you can only dispense them if they are in the original pill container with his name and dose on it. I did call my friend who is a Dr. and she said she doesn't think there is any reason children would be on klonopin unless maybe they were having seizures...GOOD LUCK on this one!!!

YOu know what?  My husband and I certainly do not condone violence to our son, who is 5 but if he is getting bullied and talking is not resolving it, and no adult is stepping in to help we've to him to stick up for himself and if that means punching a kid back, so be it....  It's a fine line there....really it is.  And my husband and I've gone back and forth and what to teach him, but turning a cheek can only go so far.   But it's tough being a kid and being bullied.  ANd that is bs that he was the only one in trouble.  Are there other schools in the area?  Or would that just teach him to run away from problems?  I don't know....that sucks.  I hope my son doesn't get into too many problems...at this point they say he's a great kid, just talks too much when the teacher's trying to teach-I have NO idea where he gets that (hehehehehe)....

Yes it really sucks. I hate it. I know my son is not perfect by any means, but, he is not horrible either. There are better AND worse kids than him at the school, and I have been tempted to home school him, but am afraid that will just isolate him even though he has 2 sisters, they are both older than. He is in the Elementary, my others are in Jr. High and High School so its not like I can even have them "monitor" his behavior for me. Don't get me wrong, he punched a kid in the stomach because the kid was bullying him, and he got in HUGE trouble at home for it. He was suspended from school, but what upset me even more is that the "bully" got in zero trouble at school. I did not take my sons side until I spoke to the "breakfast monitor" and she said that the other kid was "poking" my son and calling him names, so why was my son the only one who got into trouble? I just do not get it. Its like they tagged him as "the bad behavior kid" and so now, he will have that for the rest of his school days! I hate it!!

That's what I'm really worried about now....I was really uneducated, and still am, but I'm aware now about w/d's since going through them myself, and it is more concerning to me now then it was when I first learned of it a few months ago...  the one little boy can't talk yet and he's 3 almost 4 and the 5 y/o has like this gasping he does and a little stutter when he starts to talk....could it be from the drugs?  So sad....

That's BS, I'd be soooo pissed too.  Poor babies.  Isn't it so hard putting your child in someone elses hands?  And they have too much power.  They're humans too, moody and imperfect and they can try to dictate how to raise our kids.  phoooey.

Couldn't that be incredibly dangerous at some point in these kids' lives?  They are learning early that there is a drug for everything.  I'm concerned for their future decisions when it comes to drugs because they are being brought up on them.  And won't these kids have horrible w/d's if she decides to quit giving it to them?

Oh, and also, I told her one day that maybe if she didn't treat him like he was a horrible kid, he wouldn't act like one for you, and she actually told me, its a learned behavior!!!!!!

OMG.....I had the same thing happen and I have another "meeting" at school coming up. My 2 girls are both straight A students and the teachers praised me to no end, but my son is a different story. He gets good grades, he is 8, and in 2nd grade, but he is always "in trouble" at school. He has been called a bully, a rude young boy, unbelievable, and others and that is by his teacher. OOOOOOOOOOOOO   It pi$$es me off. He is not like that at friends, or at home, or at familys, so I don't know what to do, but I refuse to put him on meds...........I wouldn't mind knockin' his teach on her a$$ tho.....not an option, but sure a thought!!!!

Good for you....I think as an adult, I take full responsibility for my overmedicating, but it's outta control with the kids....let them be kids...give them attention and let's work it out!  Now, I know there are extreme cases, but it shouldn't be the first choice for any kids who act out.

We had to finally look at one of my boys' teachers right in the eye with the first finger pointed directly at her nose and tell her, "My kid is not taking drugs and that is the last time this will be discussed and if it comes up again I will file a harassment complaint through the school".  This lady would call us at home and tell us, "you know... that boy of yours is a perfect candidate for Riddelin you should try it".  She even said it would turn him into a fine young man!  Arrrgggghhhh.....

Someone above brought up a good point...  it would be nice to see the Rx bottle with that kids name on it.  It probably does not exist.

I don't think it's seizures.... she'd tell me for sure.  WE're kinda friends...She's got something for all her kids...trust me.  She told me it's to help them sleep because they're hyper.

I think it's really sad.  I think most little boys are hyper....it's in their nature.  All the things she's always complained about him being like are never obvious when he's with me...but you know kids...always better for others than they are for their own parents.  My husband and i just shake our heads.  What can we say?  It's not really our business, but it's sad to us.  I don't even know what the other drugs are for, like I said, there were like 4 different pills besides the Klonipin...I just knew that drug.  wow.  I don't know what all conditions if any they have.  I know that the 3 years old have speech problems, but I'm, wondering if she started giving him the Klonipin at such a young age, like 2 which i think is possible, did that affect his speech?  IDK...

Klonopin was developed and used to control seizures. Maybe the kid has seizures and she didn't want to tell you the whole story.I can't see a doctor giving a 5 year old Klonopin because he is hyper. In any case, i would not have those kids sleep over.If you take responsibility for this boy, you have to give him his prescribed medication. If he does sleep over in the future, I would ask her to bring the pills in the bottle they were prescribed, with his name on the bottle.
If kids cry too much and can't sleep. You can always give them some Sodium Pentathal.ahahahahhaahah

My sister in law is somewhat the same way with her son, she said he was too hyper, and so to me, she doped him up because she could not handle him. She even begged me and hubby not to tell her Mom cuz she knows how her Mom would react. Her Mom and I both started nursing school, but never finished, but I do not agree with her giving her son drugs to keep him "under control"....her words, not mine. Luckily for my nephew, he now lives with his dad and is doing great
