any suggestions for self detox?

I literally stopped drinking 48hours ago after 10 years of abuse im 28 n recently it has got gradually worse. after giving up n sobbing my heart out on the floor after 2 weeks of heavy drinking a bottle of vodka n beers a day i finally realised enough is enough. And if i don't stop important either gonna die or end up in prison Last night was horrendous n i withdrew big time i didn't know what it was as id never tried to really stop. Sweats violent constant shakes all night with some sleep consisting of nightmares took it outta me. i feel 100 per cent better today n wanna continue as i know it will get easier. .the shakes are slight now n after reading this help site today its helped too. can anyone help as to what foods drinks n vitamins i should take n how safe am i? As i understand length of time is a factor but am paranoid to hell about talks of seizures and am i throw the worst of the withdrawells?? Any help or advice would be greatly accepted. thank you

Congratulations to all on here that have managed to quit. I've been clean since 2000 and i love living sober and can't imagine ever going back. I used to drink 26 oz of vodka and at least 2 bottles of wine everyday. Why? what a waste of time. Hope you caught this before you damaged your liver. Mad love to the liver!!! It is so worth it to continue, please don't relapse, and have to go back to day 1. It is so not worth it. Bless you and best wishes on your journey.

Hi Guys

Well done Iboogie on your sober time it is an amazing feeling! I absolutely live my life without alcohol in it! :-) It has been 5 months since I last had an alcoholic drink and I can honestly hand on heart say that I do not miss it at all!!! However after saying that I will never get complacent, done that, been there and learnt my lesson :-)

Best wishes to all :-)

Twobits is right about checking out PAWS, and SMART recovery is very cool  well. ibizan always has something good to add to the conversation and you are in a place of support here on this site. I like the Tracker feature on here. Seeing how long it's been since I drank makes me feel really good on days when I'm down and it's been very helpful to journal for me as well. Another thing that has helped me is walking, working out and recently a lot of yoga and meditation. 2 years and 5 months for me this past week, and I can still remember what the first week was like. Congrats on what you're doing, it's an awesome feeling!

Awwww Mark well done you!!! It's great that you are feeling a bit better and have your appetite back and it does sound like you are doing all the right things to aid your recovery :-) Maybe you are now over the worse of the withdrawals (I only say maybe because I'm not a medic) your sleep pattern could be out of whack for quite some time to come, mine still isn't completely right and I've been 5 months sober. However don't worry about it and dreams although disturbing are just dreams, anything is better than being drunk and miserable all the time.

You might find it helpful to read up about PAWS which is Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome, it's nothing to be scared off but will explain why you feel the way you do through your journey of recovery, it will not all be plain sailing! I know the prospect of going to AA can be scary but you will really really need support to remain sober, you could look into alternative groups as well. I go to AA meetings and follow SMART Recovery it is on the Internet if you would like to find out more information.

Keep being strong Mark and be proud of yourself it is totally worth all the effort :-)

Thats great advice and everything i kinda been doin already. B vitamins i started taking on day 2 i finally got my appetite back yesterday tho have been drinking lots of smoothies to replenish what ive been missing. STILL NOT DRINKING :-) Ifeel better already tho the only thing is hard is the sleeping...or lack of..n when i do i dream of things from the past id try to forget and bloody drinking. Im getting there and this is day 4 without a drop. Im still having cravings but fill them with green t n a cigarette or cleaning!! My house is spotless. First day i actially felt i was dying but now i feel like a different person. I know this is going to be a long journey and the aa meetings to me are a scary thought tho i dont know why but i know im gonna need continuous support not just from family from professionals.

Thank you for replying. Im holding on and next week looking into aa and getting to a gym or running... Tho probably Slowly lol

Hello Biggerman

I'm sorry I haven't been on this site for a while, it is very dangerous to self detox with horrible withdrawals as you found out! Are you still not drinking? I am not a medic so would never give advice on self detoxing and would urge you to seek medical advice!!! As for food eat anything that is healthy, lots of fresh vegetables, lean meats and complex carbohydrates. Once you get your appetite back you will get the urge to eat things high in sugar, personally I found sugar cravings far more painful and powerful than any cravings fo alcohol itself! Try to avoid these because your body will be craving sugar and you will have an initial high and energy burst but then a low. It is best to try and eat about 6 small healthy meals a day to keep your sugar levels balanced. Buy an all round good multi vitamin and mineral, plus thiamine and strong vitamin B complex and take them religiously, it will take time but you will eventually start to feel better.

Stay around if you need more support but please seek medical advice also you will need lots of aftercare such as AA or similar groups. I hope this helps a little bit :-)

Take care and good look :-)
