Am I having Alzheimer's disease???

Hi all
I am 30 years old female, doctor by profession . I have been suffering from this strange irritating problem (unbearable now) since my childhood that I forget minor things very easily specially the tasks assigned to me by someone else. I had always been a brilliant student all my life. I could easily remember the subject in examinations if I studied hard, otherwise I did have some problem retaining it. But if I have the concept I grab everything easily. I shall give you a few examples of my forgetfulness. believe me I never do that intentionally. I try my best not to forget.
   1. If someone used to ask me to bring my maths copy in the school the next day, I used to forget for many days unless I wrote it on my hand or something like that.
2.  If someone tells me to bring something back while driving home, I forget, no matter how imporant that is.
3. I forget to take my important documents with me if I am going to apply for anything like visa, job or important things like that.
4. I forget to take my clinic keys if they are in a separate keyring other than the car keys'. And this happens almost 5/6 times a week if the keys are in a separate keyring.
5. Now I have started forgetting the patient's name if I ask in the beginning of a session and I dont write it on the prescription , I have to ask it again :( I am so upset.
6. I forget something everyday , lie I promise to call a friend after 15 mins and I forget. I forget to turn off the stove if I put something for cooking in the kitchen.
In short, I forget all short term matters. I cant recall few simple words told to me by my brother. My long term memory is very good. Many friends of mine and my family had been very supportive but don't know how to deal with my inlaws with this problem. I look quite weak, dont look healthy and had very sensitive temprament all my life. I used to cry over small and big issues a lot. Now I ve reduced crying  a lot . I used to argue a lot over things which  have reduced a lot as well. Overall I am much more stable emotionally now but more upset with my forgetfulness. Despite of crying over small matters easily I had been very cheerful and like to be happy and witty.

Do I have dementia?
or Alzheimer's disease? if yes I am so much afraid that there is no diagnostic test available before I die ...
any other problem  with me? how could I be so careless all my life?
Why do I forget the special tasks only?
what should I do?

Hello Amber
I am back with the set of pranayam which you can follow, and advise your patients to follow to improve quality of life and have better health.

The Yog Pranayam (breathing exercises) will  help you relax and also help to improve the memory. It provides extra oxygen and stimulates the left and right side of brain.
Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after 1 minute.

Bhastrika - Take a long deep breath into the lungs(chest not tummy) via the nose and then completely breathe out through the nose. Duration upto 5 minutes.

Anulom Vilom –
Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 15 to 30  minutes twice a day.

You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

Kapalbhati -(Do it before eating) Push air forcefully out through the nose about once per second. Stomach will itself go in(contract in). The breathing in(through the nose) will happen automatically. Establish a rhythm and hold your head steady. Not for pregnant women. Seriously ill people do it gently.
Do this for 15 to 30 minutes twice a day.

Bhramri Pranayam -Close eyes. Close ears with thumb, index finger on forehead, and rest three fingers on base of nose touching eyes. Breathe in through nose. And now breathe out through the nose while humming like a bee.
Duration : 5 to 12  times

Once you are better, continue the pranayam once a day.
Be patient, as the benefits will show over a period of months.Only by doing you will benefit and feel good because you are helping your body.
Keep a note of what you forgot, to see how many episodes you have per day/week/month and then you will see a trend. This trend will help you see whether the memory is improving.
You can do anulom vilom several times a day to keep the brain active.
Try to say a phone number you know, in reverse(from last digit to first digit).

Hi Amber, I feel your frustration, I have been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers
Disease.  I am an Orthopedic Surgeon and I had to resign from my job due to this illness.  I went through extensive testing, and I am waiting to get a PET Scan.

My short term memory is severly compromised, your symptoms are quite similar to mine.  My Neuro Psych revealed severe cognative damage, specifically in short term memory.

There are medications that help your cognition, one of  them is Aricept.
Also there are suppliments that can help.

I recomend that you get a book called the Miracle Brain, go to Amazon, and you can get the book for a few dollars.  It is worth the money.....Good Luck....JimmyVan

Each day write down how many minutes of anulom vilom you did and anything different or changes you notice (eg better sleep).Remember to increase the timing daily until you can do more than 15 minutes. After 9 days I will give you more breathing techniques to do.I encourage anybody else to follow this and tell us how they feel.
Forgetting ATM card - do you get more than one episode a day, when you forget something.Keep a note of these episodes.

I doubt that you have alzheimers, I think you may find some help on the expert/Doctor forums however they dont have a specific Alzheimers expert forum, but there is a brain and Tumor forum I believe and other miscellaneuos forums may have some answers. I also know that if you put it into google it will tell you symptoms /tests etc you can do. I do a lot of research that way about other ailments.  Check out some of the other threads here that members have put up with their symptoms.I appreciate this must be concerning for you, a few years ago I was doing the same thing I found it was the meds I was on as soon as I stopped taking them my short term memory was okay. Some supplements do the same thing like 5HTP and Sam -E .  Hey and welcome to Med Help ..

Hi john
being a doctor (GP), I am more upset about it ( and even wrote it in my post) and seriously thinking about going to some specialist. But recently I ve watched a video on this webite about the Alzheimer's test which shows that MRI can detect changes in brain earlier? I
wish I could get some expert advice here...
regards

If you're a doctor you should know that the only way to actuall tell if someone has alzheimers is to examine the brain after the person has died. Dr basically surmise that a person has alzheiimers by the way they act. Alzheimers is named after a Dr. who discovered that people develop plaque in their brain which is what causes the memory loss.
