is it in my head?

My doc in California 20 years ago did a bunch of tests and diagnosed me with rheumatoid arthritis. The doc here says I don't have arthritis, which would be great news except that I am still very stiff, weak, and in lots of pain. Also, my joints are changing shape and grinding and making noise. The doc here says the test results don't support a diagnosis of arthritis and I am normal, maybe fibro. What helps is celebrex or other nsaids (some more than others) and small amounts of steroids. She has forbidden me to take anything but the occasional tramadol which just puts me to sleep for a little then doesn't really help the joints. Am I crazy or what? Also, I am on antidepressants for recurring depression and just got back on them in case it is all in my head but they don't help. I am not really a nutcase or anything, I teach in a college and have some intelligence, but am being treated like I am totally ignorant or something.

Once again, the right advice from these two great ladies.  Find yourself another Rheumy and as TX pointed out make sure they take x-rays.  We have all been there and sometimes need to find the right dr. which is annoying but worth it when you do.  Keep us  posted and best of luck to you.  Hope you find relief soon.

I agree with Ada, it sounds like you have something going on and it sounds like your first Dr was right, RA.  I would get to another rheumy.  Also, if you are feeling grinding, it sounds like x-rays are in order again.  Hate it when they run labs and forget to look at the affected area!  Hang in there!

Hello there.  First off I would like to say You are not crazy at all.  I think your Dr relies to much on lab results when she should just open her eyes and see what is in front of her.  With the joint pain, grinding and the stiffness I highly suspect RA.  In about 5-10% of all RA patients, there will be no RF factor at all.  This is when they call it seronegative rheumatoid arthritis.

You need to get another Dr.'s opinion.  With your previous dx 20 years ago, I don't think there should be much of a problem in getting treatment for RA.  I definately think you should keep on taking the nsaids in the meantime though.  I am sorry the Dr is not treating you properly.

If you need to talk, private msg me anytime.  Good luck with everything and keep me posted.

Your Friend,

Ada aka Spastic
