knee pain tkr vs. injections

Four years ago, I was diagnosed with OA of both knees.  I was told by the orthopedic surgeon that I was walking "bone on bone" and that I would know when I was ready for TKR.  I've been avoiding any NSAIDS because my nephrologist doesn't want my kidneys to be further compromised, but she also has said not to "put up with the pain".  I use only Tylenol and that as infrequently as possible.

To whom does one go to have the various types of injections?  I just had a cortisone injection in my great toe to relax a tendon and the relief was wonderful.  I'm just wondering whether I should be considering something similar for my knees.  They have become more painful, but not what I would call excruciatingly so.  But relief would be great if it allowed me to walk without pain and kneel when I needed to without "grimacing".

I'm not so keen on TKR since I am alone and even after rehab know that some of the upkeep in my home would be difficult.  Also, I understand that kneeling would be as painful as it is now if not impossible as would other activities.

Your input, as well as others who have opinions, would be most appreciated.
Thank you

hi Jang...I don't have OA to my knees but I do have bursitis/OA in my hips, I do take celebrex but only when the pain is unbearable.
I'm also trying cortisone injections to the hips, had the first one in March and the relief as you say was wonderful, however for me that relief only lasted a few weeks. I haven't been able to return until now, I go again for the second injection in 2 weeks and I hope the benefits will be longer lasting. you can only have a max of 4 injections per year or risk injury to the tendon.
To have these injections there are alot of GP's out there that attempt to do them...however the doctor I see is a Doctor of Rehabilitation (PYSIATRIST)
he uses a live xray to guide the placement of the needle therefor I found there was no pain...he was very skilled.........otherwise have been told by others that the injection can be excurciatingly painful when not done with expertise.
ask you're doctor to refer you to such a clinic. and good luck with your search.

There are several options out there for knee OA.  As I do not have it, I am bumping your post up to improve the chances it is seen by one of our OA peeps.  Will keep an eye on it, too.
