Although not FDA-approved, Amitriptyline can be used for nerve pain. Many patients have had great success taking it. It also is taken for depression/anxiety. It does have anticholinergic side effects (dry mouth, drowsiness, urinary retention) and it can interact with many other medications. Neurontin does not have any benefit for depression or anxiety, but it has shown to be effective for nerve pain, but a patient must take Neurontin for at least 3-4 weeks before it begins to work. I suggest that you talk to your doctor about what he/she feels is the best option for you.
thank you for your answer. I was wondering if I could also get your opinion on the antriptyline for nerve pain damage.. I had a tumor removed from inside my spinal cord 4 months ago and the neuro and i discussed several drug options. I chose the amtriptyline because I feel I am struggling with anxiety and a bit of depression. I would rather not be on 2 drugs. We also discussed neurotin, would neurotin help with anxiety issues as well as nerve pain? Sorry for the follow up questions. I am very sensitive to drugs and don't like to take them and am just looking for some short term help with what I am feeling.
Thanks again.. .Dawn
There are no interactions with those medications. The only thing that I would warn you of is that taking xanax and amitriptyline together may cause some increased sedation.
