Lupus and Bipolar

Hi Everyone!

I was diagnosed with SLE almost a year ago. My presenting symptoms were extreme hair loss, fatigue, low BP, reynaud's, muscle aches, joint pain, and acid reflux. I've recently been experiencing bipolar episodes for the past few months. There has been no outside source that could possibly be causing my depression this severe. I have a great life and am managing my lupus with medication and accupuncture. Anyone ever experience a coorelation between Lupus and Dipolar II Disorder?

Hi Tudori.

Just do an online search for " Dr. Barnes Basal Temperature Test" and follow the simple instructions in detail.

Cheers!

Many people diagnosed with one auto-immune disease have other autoimmune diseases. The endoctrine system is vulnerable to auto-immune attack (auto-immune hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism).

Undiagnosed hypothyroidism, (Doctors have now established a link between hypothyroid and bipolar)  is mainly because of the inefficiency of the standard thyroid serum tests to verify actual cellular thyroid function.
Free T3, Free T4 and Reverse T3 are the only ones to check to rule out  hypothyroid accurately.

"Slower treatment response in bipolar depression predicted by lower pre-treatment thyroid function."

Patients with bipolar depression are sensitive to variations in thyroid function within the normal range of laboratory values. Cole and colleagues evaluated free thyroxine index and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in 65 patients with bipolar depression. A longer time to remission was significantly associated with both lower values of free thyroxine index and higher values of TSH. Patients with free thyroxine index values greater than the median and TSH values below the median had better outcomes. The authors suggest that nearly 75% of patients with bipolar disorder have a thyroid profile that may be sub-optimal for antidepressant response.

"Prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in systemic lupus erythematosus."

Our patients with SLE had a high prevalence of symptomatic and significantly more subclinical hypothyroidism and positive thyroid autoantibodies. Thyroid autoantibodies may precede the appearance of clinical autoimmune disease. Sjögren syndrome and positive rheumatoid factors were more frequently observed in SLE patients with autoimmune thyroid disease. We believe that, since symptoms of SLE and thyroid disease can be similar, that SLE patients should routinely been investigated for autoimmune thyroid disease.

"Psychoneuroendocrinology of mood disorders. The hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis."

Abnormal thyroid functioning can affect mood and influence the course of unipolar and bipolar disorder. Even mild thyroid dysfunction has been associated with changes in mood and cognitive functioning. Thyroid hormone supplementation may have role in the treatment of certain mood disorders, particularly rapid-cycling bipolar disorder. Women are more vulnerable to thyroid dysfunction than men and also respond better to thyroid augmentation. This article reviews the relationship between thyroid function and mood, and the use of thyroid hormones in the treatment of mood disorders. The impact of gender on these issues is also discussed.

I am not implying that you have thyroid dysfunction, however, you may want to consider having it thoroughly checked, as the downside of this, should you indeed have undiagnosed or misdiagnosed thyroid dysfunction, is potentially a lifetime of unnecessary suffering.
As a preliminary self- test you may want to look into Dr. Barnes Basal temperature test for hypothyroid (and adrenal dysfunction as well).
Need details, post again or message me.
(I have two members in my family in similar situations in the past and both   have substantially improved)

I have had my thyroid tested before I was diagnosed with lupus. My thyroid function is fine.

Correction:
I know this from experience AND my studies.
Before you consider any testing for adrenal fatigue,
there's a screening questionnaire for it and if interested let me know and I can send it to you.

Hi allig521.

Yes, look into thyroid dysfunction (your symptoms are classic for hypothyroidism), often underlying both of these conditions, however, be forewarned that conventional diagnosis and treatment is notoriously flawed.
Please take time  to search the "stop the thyroid madness" website and
also search for Dr. Mark Star regarding HypoThyroid type 2, just like in diabetes type 2, but totally ignored by conventional medicine.

Feel free to message me if you need any details as it is a rather complex field in medicine.
Also if you have adrenal fatigue, stage 1,2 or 3 (not recognized by conventional medicine as an "established" condition) please do not attempt to treat your suspected hypothyroid UNLESS the adrenal imbalance is corrected as both adrenal and thyroid function will deteriorate further.
I know this from experience from my studies.

This is not intended to replace medical advice

Best Wishes!
