lower left side back pain

My boyfriend has a bad lower back on his left side it is sensitive to the touch and his kidney seem fine from a doctor and protien is normal but it hurts to small touch and it looks somewhat swollen. It cause some pain but does not know what may be causing it. They have giving him pain meds to help but he still gets like this everyday what could be the cause of this?

Oh, I couldn't touch him at all, especially on his lower back. Regardless of where the abcess was.

My ex-husband suffered from Chron's disease. He got like that. I couldn't touch him at all because the pain was so intense. Turned out he had a abcess in his stomach, well kinda on his side, really. They ended up draining 300 cc's of fluid out of there. I don't know if it'll help, but I thought I would let you know. Hope he feels better soon..
