BP/Drugs/Alcohol

Hello everyone. I am new here. I was recently diagnosed but it's nothing new, I've been this way my whole life. I wanted to know your opinions on using drugs and/or alcohol...I've read a lot of conflicting information on the internet and Dr's never seem to have a straight answer. I smoke marijuana regularly to calm me down. I was recently drinking too much but have since stopped. Can anyone offer some personal insight?

Thanks,

Xochitl

Actually drugs and alcohol can often be a form of self medication for bipolar. I've known many people who coped with this issue. The best solution is a dual recovery group for people with a psychiatric disability and a substance abuse issue and the best place to discuss this part of your recovery is the substance abuse forum as many people have been through this procees there. None of these substances treat bipolar but they can numb the feelings but ultimately make things worse. For more information on bipolar and what does work google "Depression Central" (for all mood disorders).

Taking any illegal substance and/or alcohol will mess with your brain. Pot is one that will make you feel worse rather then better the more often you use it. I have to say though that MedHelp does not condone nor will discuss the use of illegal substances as methods of therapy or for recreational use.  If you are having difficulties stopping the use of drugs and/or alcohol you can always contact NAA or AA for help. We also have an area where you can discuss addictions and support while you are withdrawing from those substances. Self-medicating isn't the answer for sleep and mood issues. If you don't have a psychiatrist, you should get one as soon as you can. I hope this helps,
Much luck,
