Should I become a Shaman?
I least I will be valued in my village.

You turned the original question to a interesting topic.
It's fun discussion!

No mandated child bearing....?
Yeah....who wants to be a baby producing factory.
Some couples do like large families but that's their choice if they can afford it and give them a nurturing home. No Octuplet moms.

Me too. I am very much a bottom - although people tell me I seem tough - HAH! I like to work with my hands and talk. The sort of communes I refer to is a group of like minded people with varying skills sharing walls and trades. No relligon or mandated child bearing, etc.
Anyway, I really turned this original question. Sorry.

I feel quite content doing farm labor. At least I could handle it and feel accomplished which I could not do in the outside world.

Have you watched these PBS shows?
One was Colonial House.

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/colonialhouse/plantation.html

Everything went well until religion popped up and the village folks had to attend church.
They nearly had a riot. So they stopped. It was a interesting show. People had to work very hard to provide for themselves and the people were worn out from all their responsiblities.

The bipolars would have a difficult time but everything was seasonal. The folks had to fine tune themselves when your in mania state....good for harvesting hay.
I probarly find myself locked up in the stocks for swearing too much or become a preacher ranting away on Sunday.

Most interesting times.

Make sure if you decide to join a commune....look at the fine print in the contract...people need to reproduce.

The Shakers were once a thriving community but were not allowed to get married or have children. They took orphans to supplement their population. It was a layover for bums who needed a warm place to sleep during the winter time in exchange for labor..like cutting fire wood and mucking the cow stalls. By the 20th century
the Shaker population dropped because who wants to miss out the fun of going to a movie, driving a car and marriage!

Most of these Villages have closed down except for Hancock Village. It's all commerialized trying to recapture those quaint old days to impressed the city slickers.

There are only a few Shakers left. People are not attracted to celibacy or farm labor.

I have always had this quiet fantasy about being part of a commune. Now, there would not be any religious overtones to this commune - unless it was just a general spirituality. There would be lots of growing plants, listening to music, interesting conversations, etc.. Some would have outside jobs but some (like me) would be in charge of things back at the ranch - including watching over any children. I've heard of a few places like this over the years but never had funds to join up. I think this idea springs from the conception that I am not a whole person and do not encompass all the skills and abilities to make it through life on my own.

"Anyway out of curiosity what village do you live in? "

That the village in my mind.

A small quaint village. Where the village eccentrics are valued for their individuality. A small community living off the grid. We would have solar and wind power.  Each home would have this because large solar and wind farms would just take too much valuable space.

Smaller is better.

Do you think you could live in this home?

If you don't like your neighbor because their dog potties on your lawn...you can always move!

Love life would be cramp though.

I think I prefer to live in Who-ville

Grow local...buy locally.

We will grow your own food and do some canning just like my old farming Grandma use to do. She raised chickens for their eggs and all the non-producing hens had their necks wringed for supper. I liked Grandma's fried chicken!

With the economy going like it is...we're going to see more gardens in our backyard.
Anybody like pickled peppers?

Now don't get me wrong about the new age religions...they're basically old religions that have been revived. Meditation is good. I didn't realize that cat napping is a form of meditation! So my little kitty has some good pointers to live well.

Totally agree with you. I hope you didn't take me seriously about me becoming a Shaman. I just thought I was being funny because the video is a hoot!

I totally agree with you. You have individuals who believe the mania part is some opening up to the cosmos and trying to make it into a new age religion. What a terrible combination and inviting disaster like some of these cults you hear about. It like reality gets distorted and these egotistical individuals get people really FU up!

Never experience a cult but I never want people to mess around with my mind. I went through so many problems with my illness that I hardly call it enlightment. I want my medication so I can stay out of h@ll!

That guy's voice reminded me of Tony Robbins I think his name is.  I heard his voice when this guy wanted me to write a song like the music on his CDs.  Anyway out of curiosity what village do you live in?

Okay, part one of this video didn't press any of my buttons but part TWO comes off as some egotistical, new age, religious rant and very anti-mental illness which belittles the real science behind our condition. For those of us who are not religious the whole idea of a break with reality being a "sacred experience" sounds like the further ravings of the mentally challenged.

Sorry about that. I've been in quite the mood today.
Very interesting video and it reminds me how I've been intending on reading "A Brief History of Everything". Helps you to put everything in perspective.

I've watch the link when I can but there are so many down to earth things we can do to address social change and even for our own self satisfaction that are ultimately more productive and successful. Let's just be happy with who we are and try to find some meaning in that.
