spdx is spot-on - but bipolar 1 should read bipolar 2 :)
Bipolar 1 is the more extreme mania, while bipolar 2 is the lower-level mania.
Hypomania is a low-level mania, characterized by elevated mood or irritability, that lasts at least four consecutive days, usually accompanied with an elevated sense of self (grandiosity), minimal need for sleep, excessive/rapid speech, disorganized thinking, distractibility, and increased energy ('get things done'). Hypomania occurs as part of the Bipolar I diagnosis, meaning the periods of hypomania are off-set by periods of depression (either full blown or moderate level depression).
Please keep in mind that hypomania-like symptoms can be accounted for by a variety of other things including: situational factors, anxiety, ADHD/energy, and substance use/abuse.
