What do I do?

Hi I am a 24 year old female alcoholic & substance abuser. I have been sober for 10 months but that is only because I went into acute liver failure on May 31, 2013. after surviving my near death experience I have attended AA meetings regularly & my liver is functioning as of now. What I don't understand is I went into a 3 day episode last weekend & literally felt like I was losing my mind. I was confused & ended up at Grady memorial on the 13th floor. I was told I was suffering from: psychosis, delusions, and that I was possibly abusing weed since I admitted to smoking. What is my next step? Psychiatrist? I just need to know what direction to work so I can heal completely!!! Thank you.

My dear..you have an addiction problem..#1.The root of the addiction comes from a whole host of issues. There is heredity, environment ( how parents and peers treated you) and how you view yourself as a result of whatever past experiences you've had. With that said, anything can set you off.My advice would be to seek treatment from a therapist and listen to what she/he has to say.I will tell you, that she will recommend a psychiatrist too..they all do.Since I am not medical health professional,I can only say what might work and what might not.If you are indeed Bi Polar ( which sounds like you are) because you squashing you inner pain and crazy thoughts with alcohol, you might what want to look into many options for Bi Polar.Since Bi Polar has come so full circle in America, and the voices of medication users have come together, questioning whether medical professionals, nutritionists, and traditional therapists are the right choices.I myself suffer greatly from Bi Polar Disorder and have been seeing a therapist, but I am not medicated. Because of my illness ( which is the genius brain curse) I have been absorbing what everyone has been saying about these deadly medications, and trying to find an alternative. It's a double edge sword my dear...seriously.On one side you have the meds squashing the inner most issues, and supposed chemical imbalances, but your physical health ends up suffering greatly.I just recently saw a Youtube post on John Gray ( man who wrote Men are from Mars Women are from Venus) and he is trying to push alternative vitamins and minerals as a way coping with Bi Polar.Ironically his brother killed himself because he couldn't take the medication anymore.So..that might say something to you..plus there are tons of users voicing their dismay of psych meds.My final and last comments would be for me to tell you to be well,do whats best for you and don't let this illness take you away...be well my dear.

Thank you for taking the time to give me such true heart felt advice. I respect what you are saying about not losing myself to the illness, I am staying strong. I am going to see a psychiatrist to discuss mental health evaluations, psychotherapy, and any medicines if need be for that discussion.

First, let me congratulate you on your sobriety.  Yes. I believe your first step is to become professionally evaluated by a psychiatrist that specializes in mood disorders.  Find out what was behind the episode you suffered.  If medication is required, take this seriously.  You're a young person who can look forward to a productive beautiful life.
Be honest about the weed. More is known about it's potential good or bad all of the time. Then you'll find out what piece of the puzzle the weed plays.
I like cognitive behavioral therapy. See if you can also be seen by a qualified Psychologist.   Let us know your progress. Thank you for posting.
