Recently Diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder

I was just recently diagnosed with Bipolar II. I have horrible depressive episodes and recently experienced my first manic episode that ended in a suicide attempt.  I am now on 1,200 mg of Lithium and 30 mg of cymbalta. I just need any tips with how you deal with your Bipolar. I am scared that I will go into either a depression or a manic episode again.

I agree with freddie8605, learn your triggers.  Learn your disease, your body, your symptoms.  I was diagnosed in 2005 and I go through a depressive episode at least once a year ( and yes, sometimes they come at the same time every year ).  This year, I listened to my symptoms and went to the doc and therapist early enough.  I still went through the depressive episode because that is inevitable, but without any major suicidal thoughts or attempts.  That is a first for me!

Also, don't give up on trying to find the right med mix.  Sometimes it takes a while.  There is no magical pill.  You may have to change meds 1 or 2 or 30 times before something works good.  Just be patient.

If you are not in talk therapy already, I would suggest you start immediately!  I waited a long time before I started and I wish I would have started sooner.  It helps a lot.  Your therapist can also help track your cycles and see when your are heading into a depression or mania.

If you need to talk, feel free to contact me!

Thanks for your help. I am actually starting talk therapy soon, and have a pdoc appointment next week. I was actually hospitalized when I had my suicidal attempt and was put in a psych ward for 10 days. This is where I was actually diagnosed with Bipolar II. The hospital was wonderful and I even went to group therapy for 13 days after I was discharged. The medication mix I have right now seems to be working just fine, I am just getting discouraged because my lithium levels are always on the low side. I have a hard time with my triggers because I have been dealing with depression since third grade and it can seem like everything is a trigger.

Bipolar is different for everyone who experiences it with the some of the same elements and symptoms. First i think you might need to come to terms with the diagnoses as for a lot of people it is a lot to take in. If you learn your triggers and your early warning signs that way you will know if you are heading to depression or mania so you can prepare yourself which might also make yourself go to your pdoc and therapist. if you know your triggers then you know what to avoid to take with care.
