Stripped of my antidepressant

Im kind of nervouse cause im 38 and have had a psyhchiatrist since my mid 20's and was first diagnosed MDD and later Bipolar II Mixed episodes.
Recently I was hospitalized and then now I am in an out patient program.
The in house  PSychiatrist asked me some questions and I guess agreed that diagnosis and he changed my medications a bit.  I have been kind of hypo manic can't sit still and not much sleep  and he took away my antidepressant and I will have none.  It seems wierd.  I know some medications can send us in to mania and make it worse but shouldn't we have an antidepressant because BP II is mostly depression???

I think doctors sometimes do this to help you come out of the manic state as antidepressants can make mania worse. More than likely they will put you back on one after you have come down from your manic episode. If you are not already on one they will also probably add a mood stabilizer. It is important for people with bipolar disorder to be on a mood stabilizer while taking antidepressants. Sometimes doctors have to adjust your medication as to which way you are going, up (manic) or down (depressed). When manic they may increase your downers, and when depressed they may increase your upers to help stabilize you. Since people with bipolar disorder change so much sometimes the medications need to change alot too.

Thanks again all for your answers.  They all helped and I came down and did exactly as dr said and some of you guys/gals mentioned anti depressants and Bi polar patients don't always mix and the Dr. explained it to me.  I feel better and not as hypo and I have couple weeks left in outpatient program so well see what he does.
Thanks

I recommend you only have an antidepressant if you also have a mood stabilizer in place, unless you want to risk the hypomania. People with bipolar disorder generally aren't given antidepressants unless they have that stabilizer.

There is controversy about whether people with bipolar should have antidepressants. Lots of people do as they also take mood stabilizers with it. Some people stop them if they become manic/hypomanic and go back on them when they come back down. I was also on a stimulant for awhile, Concerta, and I would stop it temporarily when manic.

Perhaps your new pdoc is against dispensing antidepressants to people with bipolar.
