Topomax and Bipolar Disorder

I am on SSDI so my Doctor is hard to get a hold of, since I see a State Dr. He recently confinced me to start taking Topomax for my Bipolar  and I have many other disorders. But I also have alot of the opposite side affects to all the drugs they have tried me on in the past. So now I finally decided after wanting to hurt myself for the last time to go on something and something that was not surpose to be a weight gainer. You see I am 51 and just lost 100 lbs on my own from so much depression.So 3 weeks ago I was put on Topomax and now  I am always hungry and have gained 15 pounds which I am still about 50lbs over weight , and I can only sleep 3 hours a night. I am on 200 mg a day.
My mouth taste awful, my hands tingal, I have all the normal side affects listed but I see no weight gain or anyone have a hard time sleeping.  Should I be taking a higher dose then 200mg or do I need to be taken of this drug?
Also It has actualy made me more hiper and made me go out more and spend money I dont have or should I say charge up a storm!! Please help I cant seem to be  getting anywhere when I cant get intouch with my doctor.

Perhaps it is having the opposite effect and worsening things including mania. You could ask your psychiatrist about other options as regards mood stabilizers. Here is a list:

Definitely sounds like you're a little manic, with the spending and sleeplessness. Some people even eat more with mania. Get ahold of your doctor. Maybe the State has someone else on call.
