There is discussion in the psychiatric community that one episode of mania after the usage of an AD does not necessarily mean that a person is definitely BP. Unfortunately, my pdoc is a bit old school and feels that if mania develops after using an AD, he goes with the BP diagnosis.

I have only recently learned about these varying opinions, and since, have been slowly lowering my lamictal gradually. Also, evidence has shown that lamictal has some antidepressant properties to it, so I don't mind taking this lowered dose.

I am very impressed with the findings of Dr. Peter Breggin and his publications on many of the horrible side effects of the newer class of AD's. His work, as well as some others in the field, has confirmed my suspicions that my diagnosis is incorrect.

I didn't know the BP diagnosis was not a certain for you. Are they still trying to figure it out? Why do they have you on Lamictal? Just curious----ames

Are SSRI's too stimulating for you? Although I'm not sure if I'm bp, I do take mirtazapine (tetracyclic) with a low-dose of lamictal currently.
Mirtazapine isn't the perfect drug, but for now, it works...

Good luck to you...
