I've lost weight on Seroquel and Lamictal (25lbs+), those are the drugs I've been on the longest and both have been upped. My pdoc is concerned I don't eat enough, but I'm still 20lb+ overweight so I'm not too concerned. I still have remorse for things people have forgotten about..weird how we are.

When she first put me on Seroquel, my shrink said, "this will stop racing thoughts in their tracks." She was right. It also stopped the agitation/anger and sleeplessness.

I only use it short-term, as needed, and I told my doctor that I won't take it regularly long-term. My reasons were:

1. the Lamictal alone is pretty effective.
2. the side effect profile of Seroquel is of concern to me...weight gain, type 2 diabetes, potential of withdrawal issues. I have spent a lot of effort in loosing weight and I occasionally have mildly elevated blood sugars already for which I'm being monitored.
3. the cost is just ridiculous.

She accepted this. Incidentally, the Lamictal acts as a mild appetite suppressant for me. Bonus.

PS "...still feeling sad cuz I did things I never should of to my wife..." Remorse isn't the same thing as depression. Talk with her through your remorse, and then assess your mood.

Seroquel and Lithium have been a life savers. I'm a mixed state, rapid cycler - so finding stability isn't the easiest. My diagnosis is the hardest to control, yet for the most part just a little tweaking of my meds depending on where I am at seems to work. I was hypomanic for months, I had my Seroquel upped in the morning and my wellbutrin dropped, it made a huge difference.  Right now I'm struggling with anxiety and racing thoughts on top of situational anxiety and depression -  but my pdoc wants to wait a few days to make sure I can't pull myself out of it, he doesn't like to over medicate. I sure appreciate that, my brain is very sensitive to change.

Seroquel has just been approved as an adjunctive anti-depressant drug at higher levels. I can't tell if it worked that way, I was already on meds to deal with my depression, but I"m sure it can't hurt.

I'm on 150mgsXR morning and 300XR evening, I only had the sleepiness for a week or so.

You might want to set up some couple therapy, it might help with the communication. I was in that situation with a violent ex-partner who ended up dx'd borderline after we split up. He wanted me to automatically let my guard down and forgive him because it "wasn't him", no offense but it doesn't matter. I appreciated the apology but it didn't change my feelings.

Seroquel is a good medicine for Bipolar, in my experience some things it helps with straight away - like sleep, agitation  or anger and other things can take longer, or larger doses to be effective with like psychotic symptoms or depression. It has side effects that I found to be almost intolerable but I had to battle on with that unfortunately.

Hi Adel,

The difference between Lithium and Seroquel from my personal experience is the following.

Lithium got me out of the craziness of mania, but it put me in a depression with suicidal thoughts.  The lithium normally is good for depression and suicidal thoughts, but it had the opposite affect on me.  I took it for one year.

Seroquel got me out of the craziness of mania.  It works good for me.  I can sleep like a baby.  I can feel actual happiness.  The only downer is that I have daytime drowsiness and I have to sometimes lie down during the day.  I get dizzy spells. I haven't really been able to work all the hours I used to when I was on Lithium.  The mornings are hard because I feel kinda like I'm fighting the medicine.  My husband says I'm grouchy in the morning but once the medicine wears off I'm generally cheerful.  I have  most of my energy in the evenings and try to do fun things then.

When I took Depakote for 4 years it kept me at a high functioning point.  I was able to finish college and work.  I got engaged and married.  My mood was good.  I did not have any daytime drowsiness at all and generally felt great.  The worst part was the weight gain.  Depakote increases hunger so I wasn't feeling good about gaining weight.

With all these mood stabilizers I have had to sometimes add Wellbutrin if I start getting depression.

Everybody's body chemistry is different some people do excellent on Lithium and horrible on Seroquel.  At least there are choices if one doesn't work the other probably will.  Some pdocs will put people on a combination of both Seroquel and Lithium and or Depakote.

yes seroquel works very well and removes the anger.

it's supposed to be a monotherapy at times, small doses makes you sleep well a little up makes you lethargic again up a stabilizer.

the problem watch your diet to avoid diabetes, they say cataract too but all bloody meds do one thing or the other. at least seroquel is now old enough and its adverse effects are known almost and the patent will end soon so not only astra zeneca will produce it. the proof it's good is that the company made a huge profit from it

however all the AP'sa are called "crisis meds" i.e. i am skeptical abt their long term stabilization. i wish Athena can explain to us the real difference between taking lithium as a stabilizer and taking seroquel, i don't mean their properties or side effects etc..i mean the difference out of experience and also effectiveness

Sometimes medicine will take effect in certain ways immediately and then the other effects will happen after a while.while others will take a few weeks to have any effect.

I think taking the Seroquel will keep you calm and mellow.  If you start to feel the anger coming again call your doctor to maybe up your dose.

Stay away from sugar as that can cause people to get violent.  Have you ever had a head injury?  Sometimes there can be a brain injury that causes people to become violent.

Talking to a therapist helps to relieve alot of anger issues as they teach us how to change our thinking patterns.  I would highly recommend that for you.

I got verbally abusive to everyone I care about around me.  Not physical abuse though.  I don't exactly remember how fast it started working but it is a very powerful and good medicine to stop all the mania.

I've been on Seroquel for almost 6 years and yes it does work.  The right dose gets rid of the anger.  I've tried lowering my dose to 300mg but I get really angry so 400mg keeps me peaceful and generally happy.  It's good because it makes me sleep.  If I get depressed I usually take Wellbutrin with it and it works great.

Extreme mood changes that can involve anger and a loss of self control can be part of bipolar. If you feel the medication is helping on what seemed uncontrollable before that would tend to show its working. Ask your psychiatrist more about this and what their concerns were and what they can see its treating as well.
