I've had some experiences where a generic was less effective than a brand medication but but many people react the same way to both as they are basically the same as the brand medication but concerns can occur. If you have had a better reaction to the brand version of a medication than a generic it would be essential to let your psychiatrist know that. If you have always been on the generic it most likely is the medication itself but you could discuss this with your psychiatrist. I did experience mania at higher doses of Lamictal (at the time I took it there wasnt a generic available yet) and from what my psychiatrist told me at the time that can occur but you can discuss that with your psychiatrist so they can appropriately adjust and/or change your medications as needed.

I take 200 mg of the generic, Lamotrigine but I have taken as much as 400mg. I have never had a problem with mania from it. However, lamotrigine works best in keeping depression away and does little in deterring mania. The mania you have been having may have nothing to do with lamotrigine but because it doesn't do anything for it when it comes on. Other mood stabilizers, like lithium and Depakote work well for mania. I would discuss the option of adding one of them to the lamotrigine.
