You can look up medications at www.rxlist.com
With Topomax one of the main concerns is gastritis but if that occurs it can be changed to another medication within a psychiatrist's discretion. If a person experiences any stomach pains the psychiatrist can see whether it continues or if it is this potential side effect. Some people I know experienced this concern. Some people tolerated it well. Topomax is generally an adjunct mood stabilizer (additional) because as I was informed Depakoate generally works better on mania then it does on depression but each person responds differently to each medication but you could discuss this with the psychiatrist as well.
the problem with us having BP that if we substitute one med for another is only to alter the side effects to another set of side effects. I can't remember one drug with no side effects. As to the valproate it gives weight gain and sorry but it's known to cause ovarian cyst which can be unwanted for girls. As to Topamax i don't know.
