BIPOLAR I has 1 or more manic episodes or mixed episodes--symptoms of both mania and depression occurring nearly everyday for at least 1 week and 1 or more major depressive episodes. Bipolar I disorder is the most severe form of the illness, marked by extreme manic episodes.
BIPOLAR II has 1 or more depressive episodes with at least 1 hypomanic episode. Hypomanic episodes have symptoms similar to manic episodes but are less severe, and must be clearly different from a person's non-depressed mood.
MANIA SYMPTOMS:
Increased physical and mental activity and energy
Heightened mood, exaggerated optimism, and self-confidence
Excessive irritability , aggressive behavior
Decreased need for sleep without experiencing fatigue
Racing speech, thoughts, and flight of ideas
Increased sexual drive
Reckless behavior
DEPRESSED SYMPTOMS:
Prolonged sadness and unexplained crying spells
Significant changes in appetite and sleep patterns
Irritability, anger, worry, agitation, anxiety
Pessimism, loss of energy, persistent lethargy
Feelings of guilt and worthlessness
Inability to concentrate, indicisive
Recurring thoughts of death and suicide
NOTE:
Bipolar is NOT a character flaw or sign of personal weakness.
The change in mood can last for hours, days, weeks, or months.
The two vary in how much the person experiences in regards to depression. You can look on the website "Depression Central" for more information. Its difficult because sometimes anti-depressents can make mania worse. It would be hard for me to discuss mood stabilizers that might work as many mood stabilizers (and many medications in general) can affect the liver. One of the sites we have linked has a complete list of mood stabilizers that are FDA approved medications but experimental for bipolar. You could ask your psychiatrist about options you haven't tried. As for the abuse you experienced you might want to attend a support group for that. The clinic you go should be way more supportive of you. I see a psychiatrist in private practice but I know not all insurance covers that. You have a lot of issues at once and I can see its quite unnerving and you aren't recieving the support you need. This is what information I could think of. A social worker and case manager should be coordinating all of your needs but these places don't often work as they should. Try to maximize the help they can give you.
