Can sperm seep through a healthy condom?

My girlfriend missed her period, so naturally we're both asking "Why".

We haven't had sex very regularly. In fact, the last time I "came inside of her" was a month ago, two days after her period. I use quotation marks for a simple reason: I was wearing a condom, so I came inside the condom inside of her.

As luck would have it, when I got home, I decided to test that condom. Just in case. I filled it with water to the point it looked like a balloon. I inspected the condom closely for several seconds and found no leakage, breakage, tears, scratches, or anything else.

I then decided to abuse that condom and see if it would expose hidden leaks. I swung that condom around several times, which stretched the latex *significantly*. Still, no leak.

After I emptied the condom I tried to tear it apart with my hands. I couldn't. That latex was extremely strong and it would not break.

The point? We have "experimental data" suggesting that the condom functioned properly that night. Combined with the fact that we had sex right after her period, the odds of ending up with a pregnancy seem very little.

My question is: Can sperm seep through the condom without breaks, visible leaks, tears, etc?

Thanks!

I would say no. The chances of her getting pregnant with using a healthy condom would not result in pregnancy from what you have told me. I think chances are her hormones are off somehow could be from stress. I'm not sure how soon she tested but it could have been older faulty tests or the tests were taken too soon.  Try to relax and wait it all. Good luck!

Haha, yes. Great news. Can you imagine how difficult dating would be now that we've broken up? Having a kid on the way would make it impossible to find another mate. So guys out there, always make sure you wear a *good* condom.

To draw this saga to an end, she called me today to let me know, with 100% certainty, that she is indeed not pregnant. Her period finally came today - a full 11 days after the expected date. And this is a girl who is very regular. She has never gotten a delayed period before, and she is 30. So, guys and gals worrying about a missed period, here is one instance in which the cause was not pregnancy but something else - most probably a combination of intense exercise, diet, and stress. It does happen, even for regular girls who have never seen a delay in their periods.

We got the blood test results today... and they say she is not pregnant. I've read that blood tests are 10x more accurate than over-the-counter urine tests, so we are much more confident that she is not pregnant. She still has not had her period, so we are still wondering what is going on, but we no are no longer in panic mode regarding the possibility of pregnancy :)

She took a third pregnancy test this morning, using a different brand. It came back negative, which is a huge relief for us. She also visited a medical practitioner for a blood test, so in a few days we'll get even more trustworthy results.

Needless to say, today's results are a huge relief for us. Neither of us has slept well for days. Having a kid is a great thing, but you need to be prepared for it - and we aren't yet.

Thank you, Jen, for your input. For others with similar questions, I tried to be detailed in my post, so I hope someone in similar shoes finds it useful in the future. I'll come try to post the results of the blood work, just in case future web wanderers struggling with a similar situation can benefit from our experience. Hello from the year 2013, haha. We are very primitive :D

Ok I think you just answered your own question. Anytime there is intense exercising it will throw off hormones and it could take a few months to readjust she may need the birth control pill to regulate it again. The combo of intense exercising and stress is highly likely the culprit of her irregular period.

The odd thing is that she is always regular. This is the first time she has seen such a delay in her period. So of course we ask questions.

...But this is also the first time she has exercised so intensely. She began a boot camp exercise regimen that includes squats and sprints. To stay busy, she has often gone back to the gym for a kickboxing lesson later in the day - after having done a boot camp workout in the morning.

...Plus, she began controlling her diet, restricting it to vegetables and nutrition supplements (I think something called nutrislim?).

...Plus this past month she moved to a place she is not particularly ecstatic about. She has lots of questions about where she is going from here, including where she and I stand in terms of relationships. It has been a full month for her.

So the circumstances are stacked against pregnancy. Still, when we look at the fact that a week has gone by without her period, we get worried. She says she can feel it coming, but it hasn't come.

When we look at the circumstances, we find it very difficult to believe she could be pregnant. Even without a condom, the chances of pregnancy around her period are small. Combine that with a condom that we know as a fact had zero breaks or tears or leakage...

And that was the first time in a while that I came "inside" of her (inside a condom). That is one instance, at the worst time for pregnancy, while using protection. According to a website dedicated to pregnancy statistics, it takes an average of six menstrual cycles before getting a successful pregnancy - assuming you are trying.

For a girl in her thirties, the chance of a successful pregnancy, without condom and without restricting sex to around her period time, is 15-20%. That is assuming you are trying to get pregnant, which of course means having sex near ovulation without a condom. We are on the opposite end of that - we avoided her ovulation time and used a good condom.

I should add that we tried two early result pregnancy tests. Both came back inconclusive, although the first turned negative after an hour. So the tests tell us nothing, although the first might possibly hint at a negative result.

We are having a blood test tomorrow, but of course we are concerned now. Any insights on this issue? Thanks!
