Whenever I check Mirena strings, dark red/blackish gunk ends up on my finger?

Hello, i know this is very TMI. I just have a couple of questions. I had a second Mirena inserted about 2 months ago, cause the first one was coming out of my Vag. I check the strings every few times or so. Sometimes when I do though, there would be reddish brown or blackish gunk ending up on my finger. Is that normal? Is it just residue from my periods?? I have another question. I mainly got on the IUD to stop my period cause I'm tired of them. They cause a lot a problems my period, and I wanted to finish school. I just want to know on average when will my period slow down or stop? I mean since I had to put an iud twice, do I have to wait all over again for my period to stop? My friend said hers stopped after about 2 months.
