Mirena Removal

I placed my Mirena on October 6, 2006 in Chicago. On October 8, I moved to Europe. My Gynecologist there suggested to cut strings a little to reduce discomfort to my ex husband. In August 2010 I checked if everything ok and made ultrasound. Now I decided to remove IUD because it's already 5 years had passed. During my visit to the doctor he figured out that the strings are deep inside, they are too short and not visible at all. He tried hard to find it, but everything was unsuccessful (you can only imagine how that cramp!!!). He told me that surgery is needed. Is there another options? Does any has the same experience? I don't know what to do! Please help!

you never checked your strings in the whole 5 years? i would think that your doctor would be smart enough to do an ultrasound first to make sure that it is even there
