Your chances are quite slim of getting pregnant at 51, but unfortunately they aren't absolutely zero. And there is still the risk of STDs, no matter your age. Nuvaring might be a way to go to keep sure you won't get preggers, but condoms are a better bet because of the STD issue. Anyway, good luck.
ps -- The condition of having a bicornuate uterus doesn't keep you from getting pregnant, so the gyn's question of whether you had tried to have kids and couldn't, isn't really on point. A bicornuate uterus is said to increase the risk of early labor or miscarriage, but there is no literature out there associating it with trouble conceiving.
Thanks, Lucey!
I've never had kids, because of never wanting them, but I recently had an ultrasound and hysteroscopy because they found endometrial cells in a smear test - that was when I found out about the bicornuate uterus.
The gynaecologist asked if I'd tried to have kids and found I just couldn't, but I told him I'd never tried. I also found out recently that this particular abnormality means that the IUD isn't effective, but I had one when I was younger, for three years, and never got pregnant - though my periods were so excruciatingly painful it was a relief to have it removed.
I'd never heard of nuvaring - I'll look into it!
Thanks again!
I have issues with the pill also but not because of bleeding, I get sick on it, 24/7. I use nuvaring. Its a ring that is inserted vaginally and the hormones are released there. you leave it in for 3 weeks, out for one, then get a new one for the next 3 weeks etc. Maybe try that.
As fro your current situation... it really depends. Do you aready have kids? If so did you conceive right away? If so you might but because of your age, you woudlnt have quite a high chance.
All the best.
