Mri results/tests/treatment/where to go now.

48 yr. old female[barely]  My MRI in 2009, showed a small, intersellar arachnoid cyst.  Maybe this was misdiagnosed because the are so rare?  Read this on report, the Neurologist said it was normal and didn't mention a cyst..  MRI in 2012, shows empty sella, pituitary atrophy. Is it really "empty" or is this the enlarged cyst?   My vision is worsening and changes.  Distorted and blurry and have dizzy, headaches etc...  Rapid weight gain and edema.  Hashimoto's, low thyroid, female hormones suddenly went postmenopausal.  Testosterone not tested.  ACTH 8 [6-58]  AM Cortisol 6.6 [6.7-22.6]  serum sodium 134 [135-145] high urine sodium, potassium 4.9 [3.6-5.1] I was told I was negative for DI.  I was told my Renin and Aldosterone are normal, but look low to me: Aldosterone; upright, 8.3 [4.0-31.0]  Renin 0.2 [0.5-4.0].  I'm on 90mgs. Armour thyroid [thyroid still low] and 20mg. HC, which has caused worsening swelling and lost appetite and worsening symptoms of dizziness, agitation, irritability, joint pain  Lowered dose myself to 15mgs. in order to reduce swelling; which has helped some.   ill and home bound since 2009.  I need a new doc that will work with me.  I'm in real trouble and need some assistance please.   Thank you for your time.  Cincinnati, Ohio area.  I don't know how to watch for a response to this.

Hi Faith63

I did see your disc. You must be EM.
You do have a pituitary gland. I did not see any arachnoid cyst. Only a "empty sella". Empty sella means you have CSF filling part of the upper sella. The gland still there. It often correlates with obesity and increased intracranial pressure. A spinal tap is often recommended in order to verify the intracranial pressure.

Dear Dr. P,

I took a chance and sent the MRI's to your office 3+ weeks ago. Did you receive them?   Another doc saw brain damage in the area of memory on the 2012 MRI and a spect scan showed low blood flow.
Thank you for answering my question and reviewing my MRI's!

Dear Faith63,

The term empty sella does not mean you have no pituitary gland. Your question is very good and it could be that you had an arachnoid cyst from the beginning. I will be happy to review your films free of charge.
