38 years old...have a lump

I noticed a lump in my left breast over 6 months ago.  It is above my left areola and is a very odd shape - not round - more oval with irregular borders.  There seems to be smaller lumps around it which are more pea sized.  The larger lump is hard and bumpy feeling.  I have never had a mammogram and no family hx. for breast cancer.  I have neglected to go to the doctor(partly out of fear) but now I am having sternal pain on the same side.  This pain kept me up all last night and radiates all the way through to my back.  The only other change is that this breast is fuller than the other one.  I have observed this lump for a while and it does not     change  with my menstrual cycle.  Does anyone have any suggestions or encouragement that just may make me see my doc?  Or am I being overly cautious.  Would I have pain from breast CA?

Hi,

This could be scar tissue or fat necrosis.

A confirmed diagnosis can only be made after a clinical breast examination, mammogram and needle aspiration if required.

Fat necrosis is a benign breast condition whereby a firm lump forms in an area of fatty breast tissue that has been damaged. This may be from previous surgery to the breast or a bruise or injury to the breast.

Consult your doctor or breast specialist and se what they have to say about this.

There is no associated tenderness.  The lump tends to stay the same size.  I have not had any diagnostic studies due to the fact that I have not been to the Dr. yet.  I made an appointment for April 7th with my OB/GYN.  I have not noticed any discharge.  The only skin change is a red flat pimple looking spot on the same breast that has been there for a long time.  My mother has fibrocystic breasts.  I had a breast reduction 7 years ago.  I have wondered if this could be scar tissue, however, I have no scars in this area.  Thank you so much for your reply.  I would not be so scared if not for the sternal pain.

Hi,

Does the lump increase or decrease in size? Is it painful or tender?

Has a mammogram, ultrasound and MRI been done?

Have you noticed any abnormal features on breast self examination like skin changes, breast lump, nipple discharge , etc

You should see a breast specialist or doctor for your symptoms. Till then you could try some warm compresses, breast massage and oral pain relief medications.

Let us know about what your doctor or breast specialist advises.
