9mm Modular Density - Questions

Hi,

My mom just got the results back from her most recent mammogram and it says the following:

There is mildly dense fibroglandular tissue bilaterally. In the left breast there are no increasing focal areas of irregularity, suspicious calcifications or skin thickening to suggest neoplasm.

In the upper right breast and seen only on the MLO view, is a 9mm nodular density. This needs to be further evaluated with a spot compression MLO view. The remaining portion of the right breast appears unchanged since the prior study."

My Mom is 55, in good overall health, and we have no family history of breast cancer, but I am very scared, to say the least. Do you have an opinions on what this may mean? Does this sound like cancer or could it be something else?

Thanks for any insight you can give.

Hello,I know my dear that all these procedures makes us very anxious, but you have to calm down for your mom's sake. What she is going through is NOT uncommon .When I had my spot compression, the Ultra sound was done immediately after, this is a painless procedure. If the radiologist is very experienced he might tell your mom what he thinks about the node, but ONLY the pathologist( who examines the tissues extracted) can tell for sure about the nature of this node" if "your mom has to have a biopsy.Take all this one step at a time. Many women go through this procedures and as I said in my previous post,a great number of biopsies are found to be of a benign nature. You are a very good daughter..try to cheer up your mom okay? God bless you both.

Thank you so much for your reply.

My mom is getting the spot compression and the ultrasound done tomorrow. I didn't know if it was common for the ultrasound to be done at the same time or not.

I am praying it's nothing, but I can't help but be freaked out.

I will definitely keep you posted.

Robin

Hi Robin,I don't think you should be too alarmed about your mom having a recall for a spot compression. Many recalls are done just to make sure that a particular lesion is to be investigated further or not.Sometimes the spot checked is just skin that folds under compression and shows an abnormality.. If the nodule that was found has to be further investigated, then an ultrasound will be ordered and maybe followed by a biopsy that it will definitely tell what this nod is A lot of biopsies are found to be benign....about 80%. Your mom could have a cyst or fibroadenoma which are very common and are of benign nature. Please keep us posted.Best wishes.
