BI-RAD 4 Suspicious abnormality

I was told that my ultrasound findings  are a microlobulated, taller than wide, mass with irregular borders. I was ordered a biopsy. Haven't had it yet. Should I be worried? Has anyone had anything similar to this?

Thanks for all the support. I have spoke to my surgeon again and have decide to go forward with the lumpectomy. As for reconstruction I was advised if I am left with a significant size change I would be eligible for reconstruction after 1 year. I am ok with this. I just want to get this started and rid of this cancer. That is number 1 to me. So grateful for all the support. I will post soon.

Thanks and good-luck to all.

Hi ... just reading your post to MissKK1. If you have any doubt at all YES, you should have another discussion with your Surgeon or the Oncologist who will directing your post surgical treatment. Radiation will not begin until healing has taken place from whatever surgery you have as it does interfere with the healing process. There would be no way that you could say a Mastectomy would be less invasive as it is certainly a more complicated procedure and often reconstruction is done at the same time. That would mean a consultation with a Plastic Surgeon BEFORE any surgery was scheduled; no matter what type. I wouldn't say that radiation would change your breast BUT depending upon the size of the area removed by Lumpectomy the size of your breast may certainly change and you wouldn't know the end result for some time due to any swelling after surgery. I'm not sure if you did decide on Mastectomy why you are so against wearing any type of prostheses .... even if the lumpectomy results in a considerable loss of breast tissue you may want to wear a partial prosthesis so your breasts would be equal in size.
If you have as many doubts/questions/concerns I urge you to talk with the Surgeon again and also the Oncology Team. It's not a good idea to go into surgery unless you are completely comfortable with what is being done.  Take care and Kindest Regards .....

Hi, I was scheduled for lumpectomy with radiation following on Monday the 26th. I'm not sure this is the right decision for me. I'm worried about what the radiation will do to my breast and if reconstruction will be possible after. I'm also wandering if Mastectomy is less invasive and a better option for me. I do not want to wear a prosthesis of any sort. will lumpectomy and radiation leave my breast of different size? Really worried whether I should talk more with my surgeon about my options. Any information would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you

Hello,  I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis.   Just 7 months ago (May 1st)  I had the same diagnosis of Invasive Ductal Carcinoma with two tumors in the right breast.   Stages 1&2 Grade 1& 2A with no spreading to the lymph nodes.   I had a mastectomy with no chemo/radiation, and started  reconstruction immediately.   I elected to have nipple reconstruction (they had to remove mine in the mastectomy), and in  2 weeks I have nipple  surgery, and should be completely through the process by April.    As japdip described, the journey begins.   At my diagnosis I thought the world was crashing down, but keep moving through the process, day by day, and you will get there.    You have to take it one day, sometimes one moment at a time.   I wish you all the best.  You will get through this.

We're sorry too that you have received this diagnosis but now the Journey begins and I know that you are up to the challenge. You have had a good attitude so keep it up and proceed one step at a time. All things do take more time than we wish but there really isn't any rush about these things. Everything will fall into place and this experience will be behind you hopefully before you know it. Take care now, don't over-stress; worry if you must but not too much.    Kindest regards ....

Hello I received my pathology report and I was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. I meet with the surgeon on the 20th. I haven't received all of the pathology report for some of it wasn't ready. I do know it says Grade 1 (estimated SBR 3). This is not what I wanted to hear. I will keep everyone posted on what the surgeon will plan for me. Thanks for all the support and good luck to everyone.

I can't tell you not to worry but I will say try not to overdo it ... if it does turn out to be "something", try to look at it as a Job to be done and proceed one step at a time and don't let the worry sidetrack you. Never stop looking at the optimistic side though. Keeping good thoughts for you so let us know when you get your results ... Regards ....

I had my biopsy on Friday the 9th. I should know my results Monday or Tuesday at the latest. Radiologist did confirm a solid mass with small microlobulations, taller than wide with irregular borders. I am so scarred of what the outcome could be. I will post my biopsy results as soon as I here. Thank you so much for responding and support.

There certainly have been benign masses that have all the characteristics of malignant masses. As you may know or have read, pain is rarely associated with Breast Cancer. A lot may also depend upon the institution and the Radiologist reading the films as to the impression of what is seen. Try not to over stress at this point since you haven't yet had your biopsy; there will be some "waiting" along the way now. As I mentioned previously I hope that a Breast Specialist is involved in your care. When are you scheduled for the biopsy ??   Kindest regards ....

thank you, I didn't have insurance till this year and been experiencing breast pain around area of mass. I'm not sure of old mammogram finding. It will be compared to the new one. I do know the old mammogram wasn't of too much concern as this one is. My new mammogram showed enough to order me a biopsy. I been reading up on masses. I have so many features on the mass that point to malignant. I am praying that there is benign masses with the same qualities as mine possesses. Very scarred at this point.

Thanks for the additional info. I must say that "keeping an eye on it" would mean at the very least a yearly Mammogram or even better than that might be every 6 months, especially with your family history. If you aren't currently seeing a Breast Specialist I would advise you to do so no matter what the results pertaining to this present issue. I will say that if this same lesion has been evident for 2 years I wouldn't be overly concerned at this point. Any woman with a family history such as yours and at your age would be wise to have closer observation than every two years; just a thought for the future. Best wishes for your biopsy ... please let us know your results.    Take care .....

as of history my mother had bc and my grandmother. I am 50 yrs of age. I did have another mamo 2 yrs ago. the same mass was noticed but I was told they would keep an eye on it.I have very dense breast.  I now have pain there and when Dr seen mamo he ordered  ultrasound. It also detected mass. It's very small  2.8 x 3.8 x 4.1 mm I have been following post and hoping someone else has had similar results. Thanks for listening

The brief notation of the characteristics are certainly of a suspicious nature. I'm sure many women who have posted here in the past have had a similar finding. There is absolutely no way to even venture a guess as to the true nature of this mass but the biopsy will hold your answer. I don't know your age or if you have had previous breast issues or studies such as yearly Mammograms and / or Ultrasounds or if this is a FIRST. I would be concerned but worrying never helps .... I would advise that you proceed with the biopsy as soon as it can be scheduled. We hope that your biopsy will return a negative for malignancy result. Please come back and add to this thread when you receive your results if you have any further questions or concerns.   Kindest regards ....
