Breast discharges can be due to abnormal conditions such as hypothyroidism (low thyroid activity) or increased prolactin levels (may be due to pituitary problems). A normal TSH should rule out the possibility of hypothyroidism. If the diagnosis of increased prolactin is to be pursued, you may suggest doing a serum prolactin level. Increased prolactin is usually found during pregnancy, but in non pregnant women, it may herald pituitary problems, such as a pituitary adenoma.
