Most physicians follow an algorithm for diagnosis of breast conditons. Basically 1. mammo, if anything abnormal then 2. ultrasound, if anything abnormal then 3. core biopsy, if atypical then 4. excisional biopsy. If early on a serious patholgy is identified, then they may skip some of the steps.
