TSH question-please help

Hi. I have posted some issues about my breast, but I just found out I had a TSH test for breast discharge, which was normal. Ok, this is what I am wondering... Would this be a useful tool in the prolactin as well/tumors? I am so confused. Do they usually just do one test for this TSH or prolactin. Thanks

Dear Paul MD,

Would this condition be found through a simple TSH or should I ask for prolactin, too? Thanks.

Hi there.

Breast discharges can be due to abnormal conditions such as hypothyroidism (low thyroid activity) or increased prolactin levels (may be due to pituitary problems).  A normal TSH should rule out the possibility of hypothyroidism.  If the diagnosis of increased prolactin is to be pursued, you may suggest doing a serum prolactin level.  Increased prolactin is usually found during pregnancy, but in non pregnant women, it may herald pituitary problems, such as a pituitary adenoma.

Regards.
