Ultrasound mass

I felt a lump and had a diagnostic mamm that showed tissue of both breasts to be heterogeneously dense but no abnormalities seen.  They did an ultrasound in addition to the cyst which I felt, they found a 7mm hypoechoic mass, middle depth, BIRADS 4a. Now I'm kind of freaked out. If I squeeze the breast as opposed to pushing there's a hard area in the middle about the size of a golf ball.  I kind of feel a similar but smaller area on the left (which they didn't us).  Can it be something besides cancer? I am going to have a biopsy but I have to wait a week. If there's a high chance of being cancer a could go to a renowned cancer clinic but I would have to wait longer for the biopsy.  Don't know what to do or think...

Hi,

BIRAD means breast imaging reporting and data system- it is used by radiologists to classify breast lesions. Further managemnet is then decided accordingly.

Category 0: Need Additional Imaging Evaluation
Category 1: Negative
Category 2: Benign Finding
Category 3: Probably Benign Finding; Short Interval Follow-Up Suggested
Category 4: Suspicious Abnormality; Biopsy Should Be Considered
Category 5: Highly Suggestive of Malignancy; Appropriate Action Should Be Taken

A BIRADS 4 means the lesion is suspicious in nature and a biopsy would be required for a confirmed diagnosis and to rule out a malignant lesion.

Do not worry and get the biopsy done and ask for a copy of the reports. Do let us know what your doctor advises.

Let us know how you are doing and if you have any other doubts and post us the biopsy reports when they come in.

Hope this helps.

Regards.

It's in the same city.  It specializes in cancer so there was no reason to go there for routine mamms...

There is no way to tell about the area in question other than to have the recommended biopsy. A fair amount of BIRAD 4 scored abnormalities are indeed something other than cancer. I see no reason why you would want to go somewhere else for your biopsy if you already have it scheduled at your local institution. Waiting is never pleasant but it's something that we must do. Just take it one step at a time as calmly as you can.
