Hi, Should pathology lab do a HER2 test for DCIS? I have DCIS and they did ER and PR test but not HER2. I am ER and PR negative. Thanks.

Dear  Norah_Za,  If the results of the test would influence what would be done in terms of treatment, having the test done at this time would make sense, however, the significance of Her2 status in DCIS is unclear at this time.   Research continues regarding the question of significance but currently there are no conclusions.  You may want to discuss this with your surgeon and/or oncologist who could put this in context of your individual situation for you.

Until the nurse replies, my answer is , having had invasive ductal cancer, is yes! I was dx in Jan 2003 and HER2 was not done then my my hospital in England.  I had to go privately and pay for the HER2 test last year. Thankfully it was negative. My Oncologist said that as I was ER+ (PR not done, don't know why) and HER2-, it was the best prognosie.  Please ensure you have the HER2 test, in light of your hormone negative status. If you are HER2+ you should get Herceptin to allay any recurrence.

Take care,
Liz
