Hi Dr. Fernando
I am 62 years ,I usually do my tests every 6months,I am in excellent condition I felt some abdominal pain in my back which led me to go to check my lungs ,the doctor ordered an x ray which showed that I have a unilateral elevated diaphragm .I went for a ct scan which showed that everything is clean and probably the reason for the ele diaphragm is a fall during a ski trip.I have done blood ,stool test because I felt too much gas in my stomach the result showed a helicobactor and ca19-9 of 67 which scared me .I took the antibiotic for the heli which made me feel fine and my doctor told me not to worry because the CT scan showed the pancreas and other organ to be clean but he said that I should not. have done this test
on my own but since the result were high then we should follow up my life has changed because I am worried, should I worry or could the helico raise the CA 19-9 my amalyse is almost normal
Thanks,Doctor

Dear Doctor,
About 6 months ago I went for my initial blood test which showed my CA 19.9 level as 51 and it fluctuated to 43 and then to 57 and the last test which was done about 3 onths ago shoed 53. So I started giving up my beer and liquor and also started going on a vegetarian diet and abstaining completely from Tea,Coffee, Milk and sugar. I also take wholemeal bread for breakfast lunch and dinner at times. I have lost weight about 5 kilos in 4 months time. My cheeks and faced my eight loss. My friends too bnoticed that I have lost weight and my Waist line did reduce considerably and now my old trousers used 7 years ago fits me nicely. I do take multivitamin tablets and B-Complex and Vitamin C to boost up my health.
A week ago I went for a Glucose level test and found that it was 4.8 before breakfast and 5.8 the next day after having breakfast.
I would like to know the following:
My bowl movements are normal. My stools are normal. I take papaya and pineapple after my dinner. My stools are normal but at times it floats. Is it a case of malabsorption. Is my pancreas affected as my Glucose tests confirms that I am not diabetic.
Please advice as to whether I am heading towards pancreatic cancer as my CA level as reached a level of 57 once.
Please advice me as to whether I should ignore all future tests and carry on with my present living or what is the best I should do to get over this malabsoprtion of some of the food intake.
Thank you.
Manicks
I would like to check if there is any cause of concern if my reading for CA 19-9 is 58.4 (the norm range is 0 - 37). This is the first time i had done this test and that was my reading. I had been trying to find answers to my questions such as - is this a reading i should be concerned about since i currently feel well and have been watching my diet (due to borderline high cholestrol) and had been actively participating in exercise on a regular basis (run twice a week 3-4km per run)? Should i wait for 6 months and do a blood test again to see if it is normal for me to have it at this range (so as to prove that its just the way my body is and that i am not "down" with any serious gastro stuff). I am a 34 year old female who has no previous history of any pancreas cancer whatsoever.
I would only able to get to see the doc at the gastro only in mid feb next year (this would be 5.5 months after my blood test on 19 sept. ) Should i skip this check by the gastro doc altogether since i am not in the "high" risk group? What is value of the CA 19-9 that would be a cause for concern to address with a gastro doc?
Hi. I'm glad to hear the news about your husband. Based on the CT scan findings, I would agree with your doctor that this is most likely chronic pancreatitis. Just have the additional tests done three months from now as your doctor recommends. I'm sure everything will turn out fine. Good luck.
I cannot thank you enough for your previous posts to me........they have helped me get through the difficult "waiting time" of abdominal CT scan. The gastroenterologist we saw today has diagnosed chronic pancreatitis at this time. He has re-scheduled both the CA 19-9 blood test & CT scan in 3 months. My husband is not experiencing any symptoms at the present as he did with acute pancreatitis in Jan (Amalyse 811) CT scan showed no masses only scattered punctate areas of calcification within the unicate process, head & tail. The bulk within the head. I feel this is good news.......what is your opinion? Again....many thanks!!!!
Hi. Yes, it is possible for the CA 19-9 level to rise in cases of acute pancreatitis. Some studies estimate the incidence of elevated CA 19-9 at around 25% of cases of acute pancreatitis. Feel free to make additional posts to update us of further developments regarding your case. I'm particularly interested in how the abdominal CT scan results will turn out.
CT scan of abdoman with ( ?slice test of pancreas) has been ordered. Would a recent case of Acute Pancreatits (elevated amalyse 911) be indicative of current situation?Thank you for your help
Hi. The normal level for CA 19-9 in serum is 0-37 Units/ml (Source: Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine,17th ed [2008]). I checked your other posts, and found that you also have been asking if a level of 302 U/ml should be cause for concern, so I'm also going to answer this question. An elevated CA 19-9 is merely suggestive, but does not definitively indicate a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. A level of 302 U/ml will probably prompt me to order an abdominal CT scan to check for pancreatic masses. But an elevated CA 19-9 result by itself, without additional evidence of the presence of a pancreatic mass, does not provide enough proof for a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Other diseases which cause jaundice (yellowing of the skin due to increased bilirubin in the blood) can also result in elevated CA 19-9.
