Lung cancer advanced stage

My grandfather is a heavy smoker and he had been smoking for a long time; two packs of cigarette a day. He is in his late fifties. Couple of months ago, he had been complaining about chest pains. When we decide to see a doctor, the doctor said that it was a mere muscle sprain or something like that. He gave some medicines but my grandfather still complains about his chest hurting. Roughly around last three weeks ago he suddenly had a high fever and was admitted to the hospital. By this time his left arm was numb.

We had just got the biopsy result today and was comfirmed to have lung cancer at an advance stage. The doctor did not specify what stage he was at. The doctor said that they cannot remove the malignant cells but they can perform radiotherapy and chemo. I know that the chances of survival is low since he had not quitted smoking; just cut down on the amount of  cigarette he smoked and there's only a 5 year survival rate... Is there a away to increase the survival rate? I've read about holistic treatment on lung cancer but I'm not so sure about it. I heard Asian Ginseng helps to cure some cases of lung cancer.

Please answer as soon as possible...

Is it Small Cell Lung Cancer or Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer? Your doctor needs to give you better info, treatments are different.I am a 10 year survivor of Small Cell. Had chemo for the lungs and gamma knife for mets to the brain. Can't advise on herbal supplements as I didn't use any. I didn't quit smoking during the treatment because they told me I had 9 weeks to survive - so why bother? Note this was in 2002 and I'm still here! I was 50 at the time.
