Can you administer live stock antibiotics for your cat?

I have taken on an elderly cat from someone who can't take care of him anymore and noticed he has a terrible upper respiratory infection. Apparently  it has been an ongoing and untreated problem for years. He has all the classic symptoms of an infection with green mucous in the nasil passages, phlegmy cough and occasional drainage from the eyes.  I was passing through a local hardware store that carries farm supplies and noticed antibiotics on the shelves. I don't have the money to bring Ziggy to the vet. I don't foresee  any money in the near future. Which brings me to my question... Can I administer a farm antibiotic to a cat? In the correct dosage as well?

here is a link to a real good amino acid I mentioned, this is the one I use for my cats.
it comes with a scoop inside and a full scoop is 1200mgs. I would give your kitty 1/2 scoop daily, mix the powder with a little water and give by dropper. until all symptoms have stopped
its okay to give this along with the antibiotic.....

I agree, you've done a wonderful thing taking this poor ill kitty into yr home. Please do call a Vet clinic, speak to a Vet not the girls that answer the phones or the techs....your kitty needs amoxicillin tell the Vet why you can't afford a visit. He also needs an amino acid called Lysine..this is so very important for upper respiratory troubles.
But whatever you do PLZ DO NOT give livestock meds, they are not the right ones for this type of infection, also they will poison a cat
Wishing you both my prayers.....

thank you so much for answering my question, I've been getting desperate! As you could probably tell! I knew that probably wasn't okay, but now I know for sure.
Ziggy probably wouldn't make it at a shelter. Considering his many ailments, he would most likely have been put down. He has other issues that I'd like to discuss on here too.
Thanks again and have a fantastic spring day!

Hi Sparkle,

You are pretty wonderful for taking on this elderly cat. These poor cats all too often end up in Rescues where they just wither away alone . No one want to adopt them so they live their lonely days out without the love and care of their human whom they loved. I wondered sometimes if they ever really wanted to continue living without someone to love them one on one.
VERY Sad.

So now you have this cat who is very lucky to be with you and cared for by you. You do not have to go to the vets, you can call them and tell them just what you have posted and ask them to prescribe an antibiotic. Just the price of the antibiotic would not be that much. Explain your situation and they may just give it to you free or make payment arrangements. You should not even think about giving medication to a cat that has not been prescribed specifically for them.

So now after the infection clears up you will have a wonderful elderly kitty who only asks for your love and care. Good for You--You are his angel now.

Keep us posted on your elderly kit adventures! We are here to support you, so stay in touch.

God Bless you for your kind heart
