Cat has diarrhea..

My cat was on an antibiotic and I am assuming it gave him the diarrhea in the first place...however he has been off of it for a few days but every once in a while he still gets diarrhea. Is this normal? Is it possible that the antibiotic gave him diarrhea at all?

sorry I only use the powder form of probiotics....you will have to go to a human health food store and ask them for the plain, non flavored yogurt with muli strains of bacteria....be sure it has NO sugar or soy....sorry I can't recommend any particular brand..I don't recommend the grocery store brands...they are full of artificial sweetners and very little of the live strain bacteria that you need..

Also you said the whole yogurt thing...is there a specific brand you would use? I was going to go get some tomorrow but I didn't want to get the wrong kind.

his gut flora is upset and he needs the probiotic...that should help :)
but yes the after affects of an antib can take awhile to get out of the system..

It wasn't a shot...would that still matter? He was on the medicine for 10 days and has now been off for a week. I didn't think it would still be giving him the diarrhea.

Any time my cat requires an antibiotic shot...he gets loose stools.  As the shot lasts about 10 days....he may have trouble for awhile.

So I shouldn't worry too much? Even though its been quite a few days? I actually think its been a week today that he has been off of the antibiotic. He is eating and drinking as well as acting normal so I'm not too insanely worried. However I always worry a lot.

yes antibiotics can cause diarrhea in cats...they also upset the FLORA in the gut just like with us humans.....he needs a good probiotic to adjust his flora back to normal(we do too after antib's)
if you are near a good Health Food outlet, I will give you some good ones to buy for cats...they have to be FREE of all additives such as sugar, salt, soy, gluten etc.....or if you can buy a good brand of yogurt, with multi strains of bacteria...a PLAIN, non flavored, with no additives...you can give him some of that each day and the problem will correct itself in no time...

these are human supplements that are safe for kitties, just remember the dosage recommended are for us, a little cat needs much less, I usually put just a sprinkle of the powder in their food.
