Why is my cat drooling?

2 days ago my cat which I've had for over a year, started drooling excessively. I mean drool was pouring out of his mouth, almost like it was a faucet turned on the lowest setting.  He was leaving puddles everywhere he laid down. Other than the drool, he was acting fine, however a little less active than he normally is. He was eating his hard food, not vomiting or any other sickly symptoms aside from the drooling. I took him to the vet yesterday to rule out a bad tooth and the doctor noticed a small amount of gum disease but nothing that would cause the drooling. He did however notice tapeworms, which another vet never noticed, so we are now treating that.  I woke up this morning to find no drool, only to return home from work and find him drooling again and even more lethargic but still eating. I hate to waste tons of money at the vet, especially when I'm told my cat is fine and it was probably just something that maybe my cat smelled that irritated him.  My apartment complex has not sprayed. The vet also told me that maybe my cat got stressed out over something but he is an inside cat and nothing has changed in the home environment. I don't' know what to do..............Has anyone out there had this problem in cats?

it could be a condition called rodent mouth. just something you might want to look into.

Hi, how is your cat's heart?  Has the vet commented on any heart murmur?  Sometimes when a cat has a disease heart, fluid will build up in the lungs and come out of the mouth.  It would be relatively large quantities and it would look like drool.

I'm sorry if I scared you, don't want to do that.

I hope that it's not a heart condition.  Best wishes, and please let me know how things go.

I read the article you sent and I do hope it isn't FLOR'S either! Will keep you posted.

The vet did look down in his mouth to check his teeth & gums but I can't say for sure he took a good look down his throat.  I'm going to say he probably didn't.  I have read several articles online already regarding excessive drooling that isn't brought on by kneeding or purring and it is actually quit scary.  He continued to drool last night, along with being lethargic but I noticed he has happier & more active this morning, with no visible drool.  Waiting till my son wakes up to check the cat. If he's still drooling I'll take him in again today for another check-up.  Thanks for the input!

could also be FORL's although I sure hope not, I have one with this condition...but he has never salivated excessively. the only way to diagnosis this is by xrays of the mouth or probing while under anesthesia....
this is a very painful condition and can't be seen by just looking in the mouth...

Did the vet look down kitty's throat really good?  There was a kitty here who had a little piece of something (I can't remember what) that had gotten caught and he couldn't get it out.  I don't believe his was caught on the first trip either.

I hope someone else comes soon that can add to this or remember that kitty.
