My 15 yr old male cat died... :( What caused it ???

(I live in Ontario while my parents live in Newfoundland.)
(My cat lived with my parents. So I do not have full details. So here it goes.)
His name was Moe but we always called him Kitty!
HE was 15 years old and he died on February 2, 2012.. at 1:30 PM Ontario time.
My mom told me that on February 1st .. He seemed to be choking and frotting at the mouth (which stank). She said it looked like he was in a lot of pain and that he wouldn't & couldn't move. (He was trying to cough up a fur ball)  She said she thought he was dead a dozen times that night.. he died 36 hours after that. And in between that time, he seemed to be getting better. But the next morning my mom told me she found him in MY closet and that she heard his last breath. I don't know if it was old age or something completely different. But if anyone has any ideas it would be really helpful.
Oh and btw.. Kitty's mom... Puddin also known as Puss.. She is still very alive. 16 years old and still in great health.

P.S. I hope this all makes since.. I wrote this quick.. and I will be checking this often so if you have any questions just ask and I'll get back to you ASAP! Anyways thank you all in advance!

I'm so sorry for your loss.  In all honesty, I don't think anyone can really answer you about why he died.  But, I know everyone would still send you their condolences.

Thank you for your condolences! :)
He was only choking on a fur ball 36 hours before he died.. He got it up after all his pain and suffering. My mom told me he seemed to be getting better that night. But like I said my mom woke up the next day to find him hiding in my closet and she heard his last breath. I don't think he was choking at the moment he died. but that is probably what caused it. I feel so bad that I couldn't be there with them. I wish I could have held him one last time. But I am VERY happy I got to see him the last time I was home. He died 17 days after the last time I seen him. :( Ohh, I miss him! My poor ***** cat!
R.I.P. Kitty!

Sorry to hear about the death of your kitty. From your details, it sound to me like he may have choked on something.  I don't think he just died of old age. When I was 15 my dog of 14 yrs died.  He was my friend, my constant companion. You can't replace something like that. As time goes on it get easier, but you never forget those so special.  Kitty hugs ((>^.^<)) to you.

Alright! Thank you FurballsMom!

I was just curious & thinking maybe someone had the same sort of experience like this with their cat. He's been a big part of my life. Ever since I could remember actually. I've never lost anyone as close as him. & now I know how it feels.. & it feels so horrible! :( I just wanted to have some clue on what happened to him. Maybe it would make me feel better about his death.
