Male 5 y.o. trouble urinating and in pain

My Max is in pain...and I'm sure it has to do with urinating. I just now saw him urinate on carpet a little (which is NOT normal for him). He is an indoor/outdoor cat. Never any health problems. I have attempted to look to see if there is something apparent when he lifts his leg to clean himself and he growls...he even hissed (never before). I just became aware of this today, of course it's the weekend. Can't afford an emergency visit if I can help it....but...
If anybody has any ideas...please let me know.
Thanks

Please don't wait 2 weeks to take your kitty to the vet if he is showing any kind of signs of not urinating. He will need to see the vet asap! This happened to my kitty a couple of months ago, and after several trips to the vet in a 3 week period he didn't make it. He would be OK between visits and it would happen again after several times of be catheterrized. The vet said that sometimes crystals can get blocked inside the kidneys and when that happens they can't pass them even with a catheter.

Max was at the  Emergency Vet  yesterday. They told me male cats w/ UTI can die within 12-24 hrs..... It is a common male cat problem. They said I caught it in time but like christy said...if there were a blockage, they would have to sedate and catherterize him...and this could run well over a $1000.00.
They put him on an antibiotic and urinary health dry food., I have to watch him and make sure he is urinating. He will return to vet in two weeks....
How scary is that???

I was advised by neighbor who is a cat rescuer (owns 5), to add brewed red clover tea to his diet and also corn silk tea...? after finishing the antibiotic as a preventative measure.
Anybody heard of this?

Thanks....I thought as much. Vet here we come. Max has always been fed a combination of dry as well as wet food...every day...no biscuits. I think your long distance diagnosis is correct.
Thanks again for your quick response.

Without watching him I would say this is a typical sign of crystals in the urine or urinary tract infection. There is nothing you will be able to do for him without a vets intervention because it means he can't pee properly and will have a blockage due to crystals or infection and this can lead to other major problems so seek help asap. They will probably put him on antibiotics to reduce infection and some tablets to dissolve the crystals and may even have to insert a caffeter to drain the built up urine if there is any there. This is a common disease for male cats who are fed dry biscuits and can be something that will keep on re-occuring unless you change his diet. Hope all goes well for him bestest
