my cat disappeared for 3 weeks and i thought id never see him again... he came back a few days ago in bad condition and yesterday he scratched a scab off his face which left a huge hole in his cheek, flesh and bone showing. what should i do considering i definitly cannot afford to take him a vet as it would be waaay too expensive??? :(

He is doing so much better w/ the antibiotics we are so happy. The wound was starting to smell bad and look like the skin around it was dying, we were scared but he has bounced back w/ your help, hes running around and playing w/ lil kitty and the wound doesnt have that smell and it looks about 80% healed. We cant thank you enough for your generosity w/ the info you have to help people in our situation keep it up.

Thank you,
Ramona

Yes, that is right. I have a first aid spray made for cats that I use; it's not that expensive at all. If you can manage, it's always best to manually explore the area for obstructions.

I recall one cat who we caught who had a terrible mouth infection. We ended up pulling through a hole in the cheek six inches of string that had somehow gotten lodged in the pocket of flesh between the gum and the cheek.

Cats have a wonderful propensity for healing, but you have to watch for signs of how things are going. always go to a vet if things don't seem to be improving or something seems amiss.

Again, glad I could help out. :)

I very much appreciate your efforts in tryin to help me with my cat, I am very thankful to have some who cares and doesnt need money to give their advise, again your the best, but i have found some information that might be useful to you and anyone else who might have a problem like mine and their kitty which came from a 16 yr experienced vet so here it is.

It is not sufficient to cleanse any wound with peroxide and expect it to heal properly, as peroxide can be too harsh and damaging to tissue. And, peroxide is not an antibiotic, so do not repeat the peroxide cleaning, you could be doing much more harm than good. If something is stuck under the skin, it will require surgical exploration and removal by your vet.

thank you

No worries. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask. Reality and desire don't always match up, an unfortunate thing. :)

If you have any amoxicillin laying about, or a friend has some, than you can try using that. I would guess about 1 milligram per pound of cat (I'm just guessing here).

Otherwise, just wash the wound as best you can and leave it open. I'd force feed kitty if he isn't eating. Use KMR milk replacer or something similar for the extra vitamin/nutrient benefits.

If your cats do survive, then I'd suggest calling around to vets and finding one who will do emergency service on a pre-paid basis. tell them straight out; I won't use a vet who doesn't have the compassion to give treatment regardless of payment in an emergency.

Frankly, you can always just go in and at the end of the appointment say you forgot your wallet, you'll bring it by in two days. *shrug* what are they going to do, call the police? It's a civil matter. Just be sure you do pay within the next few days (I did this once, in an emergency).
If they refuse to give you the med's without money, get indignant and tell them you'll take THEM to court. Hey, you never know what'll work until you try it.

Untreated infections can lead to heart failure.

Some vets will treat the animal and give you 6 months to pay it off. Some vets would be willing to do it for free. If none of your vets will do that, then the animal shelter may be willing to treat him for a nominal charge. In perspective, it will probably $35 for the visit and $15 for the antibiotic. You can tell the vet you can't afford stitches...he may just be willing to do that for free, if he knows your financial limits. If you can fianance $50 over a few months, it's a small price to pay for easing your little friends intense pain. Have mercy. Take him in, even if you have to give him away...he needs treatment.

Please take him to the vet! Call around and tell them you have no money.....but that he is really sick! The same thing happened to a cat I had years ago, and I didn't take him to the vet. (I was 18 and clueless at the time) He died. An infection can and will kill him.

Do you happen to have any amoxicillin (antibiotics) laying around? If you do, let me know how much he weighs and I can tell you how much to give him and you could start him on AMOXICILLIN.....but that is the only kind he should have...only because I am not sure of the others. Clean his wound, and if you can get an antibiotic cream put on it. I wish I could help you! But if you call around some vets will help him for no charge. Just tell them how much you love him but you can't afford the vet. Tell them you can and will pay them when you get money someday...or something like that!
Good Luck to you and to Your Sweet Kitty

Do you have a local ASPCA? They run low cost clinics in many communities. Check your yellow pages.

Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet, as they say, when a wound is bad as you describe. He should most likely have profilactic antibiotics and perhaps a dressing on it.

I hope he is going to be ok.
