Anger/depression

Hello, I was just curious if anyone on here had suffered from sever depression or anger that also had chiari malformation? I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder as a younger teen. Later on in life I figured out that I had chiari malformation. My tonsils were protruding 13mm past the skull line.  My neurologist mentioned that such sever protrusion could definitely cause depression/anger in his own professional opinion. any info would be appreciated. Just want to say thank you for all of your comments!  I got the news of my malformation abruptly after a football injury and immediately had the surgery. Due to insurance issues I've only been able to see my neurologist twice. Once pre surgery and once post. I never really got to know Ins and outs. I found this forum and am just curious to find out more.  I don't know anyone else close to me that's ever had this issue. So again thank you!

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

I will say YES !! At many different times in my life I had issues with depression....but much of it I feel is due to pain I had with no answers, but pain and the compression of the brain stem and spinal cord can not only affect us that we have pain, we can have a extreme change in mood...and  we can cry easily or laugh....and even get angry really fast....

We are all different in how we may be affected by this condition...and as kristy mentioned above if the spinal cord is involved anything can be affected....

Yes definitely .
I personally feel that there exists a connection between depression, anxiety etc., and chiari malformation
.Like kristy12 pointed has pointed out  ..medical conditions can co exist some times.,
In some cases  psychological problems due to neurological problems have been over sighted by drs and patients have been treated with just depression drugs.
That is to say  when neurological problems and psychological problems co exist some drs tend to add more value to the pyschological problems and tend to dismiss the neuro angle.

But I personally think that  the psychlogical problems are more a  result of neurological problems in cases where both co exist.

When central nervous system is affected, one should expect behavioral problems. That is simple as 1+1=2. So yes, your neurologist is correct. Sometimes tho, medical conditions can coexist, so you may be prone to depression, anxiety, bipolar, whatever biologically and then the neurological condition makes it worse.
