Any input about Mayfield Clinic in Cincinnati ??

I live in Toledo OH and have been searching high and low for a Chiari specialist when I came across the Chiari Malformation Mayfield Clinic in Cincinnati OH. I've never heard of this place before but my niece who was like 11 at the time had her decompression surgery done at Cincinnati Children's hospital and it went really well. I found a few people at Cleveland Clinic (which would be closer) and one at Ohio State University (again still closer) but the fact that they call themselves a Chiari Clinic attracts me... What doctors have people seen there and what were your overall impression of the facility? Has anyone heard anything amazing or horrific about this place?  The problem I'm having with choosing a doc at CC or OSU is that I can't tell if they're actually a specialist or just have heard it mentioned in med school and saw it on Greys Anatomy once :-P

This is tough and extremely scary I already am limited on options because lack of specialists (so a second opinion is almost out of the question) but I'm essentially choosing someone to put my fate and my life in their hands and I just have to trust my gut and go with it! Ugghh!

Just found out my insurance is accepted at Cleveland Clinic. I can go there just as seamlessly as I can go to the hospital around the corner from me. This is a good feeling :-)

Hi...If I remember correctly a Dr Tew started that clinic and has since retired from doing surgeries( at least that is what someone told  me not sure about the retirement)...but he has a great reputation in Chiari circles and was included in Chiari conferences with top Chiari specialists in the country...I am sure he would have competent Drs working at a clinic he founded...

I'm pretty sure that there are testimonials online for the Mayfield Chiari Clinic that you could review.  Also, I would suggest to call the doctor's office at CC & OSU to inquire about how many surgeries done yearly for Chiari & how many non surgical cases treated yearly.  I don't think there is an actual certification for "Chiari specialist"....but you do want someone that Chiari is their main practice!!!  I also think that you will find that there will be both positive & negative responses to all doctors/facilities..................it is more important for YOU to feel comfortable/trustful with your doctor & the treatment plan.  Never hurts to get more than 1 opinion & keep searching until you feel that you have found the right doctor for you.  Wishing you the best!!!!
