Anyone have experience with Diamox?

I just took my third dose of Diamox this AM; I am supposed to step up slowly, 1/2 tab increments until I'm up to 1 full tab 3X per day.  Here is my question....if you've been on this med, when did you notice a difference?  Did you notice one at all?  I realize everyone is different, but I'm anxious to see if this med helps.  Also, did anyone else notice a difference in the way carbonated soft drinks taste while on this med?  I noticed the same metallic taste to soda when I was on Topomax....really strange!!

I have had a lot of success with Diamox, but am also VERY familiar with pretty much every side effect listed for it...can't win all the time.  I noticed a big difference within a few days.  I have no idea if that's the norm so you should take it for however long your dr said and see what happens.

250mg worked for me originally, just recently started on 375mg so we'll see.  But when I took 500mg, it felt like I wasn't taking anything.  Diamox reduces the pressure in your head by decreasing CSF flow so it kinda makes sense to me...if my pressure isn't high enough to need 500mg, 500mg would make it worse right?  Just speculation on my part.

Common side effects:

1) Carbonated drinks - yep, they taste different.  Either I got used to it or it went away eventually.  Losing your taste for carbonated drinks isn't a bad thing though!

2) Tingling in hands/feet - can be quite painful.  It's due to potassium, so eat a banana everyday.  This went mostly away for me after about a month, but now it seems like it's harder to "wake back up" my hands/feet if they fall asleep...maybe coincidence?

3) Dehydration / urine increase - I think this one's guaranteed.  Drink 64oz of water a day or you could get kidney stones (which are AWFUL if you've never had one).  It's a diuretic so you pee a lot more too.

4) Cold sensitivity in hands - Ever since starting Diamox my hands hurt whenever they touch something cold for too long...so I try to not touch really cold things

Hope that helps

The lower back pain...was it in the kidney area?  Diamox takes a toll on your kidneys which is why you absolutely have to drink a ton of water.  I get cramps in my lower back if I'm not drinking enough water.  I imagine some people's kidneys can't take it even with the water though.

I'm weaning off diamox right now. It gave me way too many adverse side effects. It helped a little, but not enough to put up with all the side effects i was experiencing. I had all the above mentioned side effects as well as terrible low back pain and started feeling really depressed. Not sure if that's the norm. Overall I just did not feel like myself, which was an awful feeling. I was up to 3 pills a day, 750 mg. I'm down to 1 250mg/day and I've had some effects going down, but my throbbing head isn't any worse. So perhaps my dose was too high? Oh--and I was feeling slight improvement on the drug after about a week and a half.

Hope it works for you.
