Crazy...honestly I wouldn't mind too much but I am only 33!! In that case I guess I should be glad that I had all my kids early.
I also read that it could be due to hypothyroid, high blood sugar or lingual nerve damage. I figure I'm a candidate for all 3: I am hypothyroid, had gestational diabetes in all 3 of my pregs (my dad and brother have type 2) and of course we are all susceptable to the nerve damage part. I figure that I am going to have to make the dreaded trip to my PCP...and get some blood work down. I admit I am avoiding it..for right now I am dousing my tongue in ice water all day and it seems to be helping..
I have had things going on with my tongue for quite awhile. i thought maybe it was thrush also but it isn't. While I was looking for info on another female problem I came across a list of symptoms for women who are going through menopause and peri menopause and believe it or I was floored to read that a burning tongue may be a symptom of this. I could not believe it. This can start as early as your 30's. Just thought i would throw that piece of info in considering I never knew this was a female symptom. I found it under the 34 symptoms of menopause. Crazy.
Chadry
hi when i got thrush it was within the first week post op,
it started with this NASTY taste in my mouth, with an awful film on the far back of my tongue, and my tongue, gums and cheeks-no matter what i tried it didnt help i went to the doctor and they gave me this liguid stuff that you had to swish around your mouth then swallow (YUCK) then on one of my hospital stays i was able to talk them into diflucan (tablets) which has helpt.but to this day i still have that burning sensation in my mouth when i eat sweets, especially things like M&M's,some drinks etc...doc says he doesnt know why i still get the burning sensation
i change my tooth brush every few weeks, and changed my toothpaste every new tube.
i know that you can gargle with salt water with some vinegar in it dont remember the ratio anymore, none of the moth washes done anything for the thrush except gave me an even worse taste in my mouth...YUCK....
i really hope for you its not thrush!!
i was told its caused by all the anti biotics given at time of surgery, and being i went through 2 hefty operations within 20 days of each other- they say thats why mine hung around so long...
good luck in finding the answers
always neat when you can educated people
I hope ur NS is able to give u a better direction with this.
And I hope u feel better with it tomorrow too : )

He didn't really say if it was swollen or not but it feels like it is...
I think that it is aggravating me enough that I may put in an email to my NS tomorrow to see if he thinks I should worry about it. When I looked up lingual nerve damage, it describes my symptoms exactly.. I just don't understand why it is getting worse and that's why it bothers me.
Anyway, I'm going to sleep on it and see how I feel tomorrow.
Good for u teaching another dr about chiari !!!
I am glad it is not thrush, but a neuro issue...did he say it was of normal size and not swollen?....is it that it just feels like it is?
My PND has been worse since surgery and I have had sore throats...but I also have gerd and I am a mouth breather....so I never am sure what is causing my issues.

So..my DH ended up being able to come home for awhile so I went down to the clinic...
I told the DR there my history and he looked at my tongue and he doesn't think that there is anything there. Apparently, those big bumps can be normal for some people (I wouldn't know, I don't normally have a reason to look!!) So his opinion is that it is neurological, he says there is a main nerve that serves the tongue and it can be causing all the weird burning and buzzing. Honestly, I had a feeling that was what he was going to say but I think I was in denial!! I think I just wanted to once have an easy, curable explanation!!! ARRRRGH!
Anyhow, now I got that out...I have noticed the lovely throat clearing is back and I'm sure next on the way is the PND..sigh
So now I'm just going douse my tongue with cold fluids and hope that this is a sign of nerves healing..
On the plus side, the clinic DR was really interested on my diagnosis, symptoms and what they did in surgery...so at least I got to pass some info around :)
I wonder if u were slow to absorb the antibiotics...but a swollen tongue is a sign of thrush as is the white pasty film.My roommate while in the hosp had it right away could barely talk her tongue got so big....Please let us know what u find out !
I do get acid reflux here and there, have for years...
I don't see too much of the pasty film except maybe way at the back of my tongue but I can't tell if it's the flashlight making it look white..no cracks but these big blisters all over the back of my tongue.
I had only had antibiotics in the hospital which is why I would find it weird that I would have problems now..However, it has bothered me for weeks, just has got worse in the last few days.
I am going to try and make the clinic before it closes tonight...I guess I'm just trying to settle my nerves!! My swallowing is bad enough and so I hate anything that makes it feel worse!
HI Carolyn,
May I ask, do u also have acid reflux?....if so u may have some issues from the acid.
Thrush u get a pasty white thick film on ur tongue.....and it cracks.
Can u try to go to the clinic tonight after ur DH gets home?....or call ur PCP to see what he feels it could be?
When did u finish antibiotics?
