Can cerebellar descent be caused by a trauma to the head?

Good evening,  I have read many of your posts here over the last few days and am inspired by your courage and stoicism. I wish you all well and hope you dont mind me  reading and posting here for information. I just heard the term Chiari 3 days ago and have been in a daze since then.

I had a concussion  20 days ago, following a blow to the left temple.   As well as a headache , I experienced waves of strange feelings in head including cold feeling, numbness, waves of tingling and pressure with dizziness.  Very sleepy, irritable  and emotional. Pressure headache worsened after activity and as days progressed. On and off nausea. On day 6 was sent to ER from work. concussion diagnosed and rest prescribed. Over next few days felt recurring waves of above symptoms, a change in my vision( felt that my left eye had moved , although it has not.. but vision in it has diminished) , waves of sounds in left ear and appeared to others to squint. Experience unsteadiness and a complete body tremor a couple of times when tired. Sent home from work again on days 12 and diagnosed as Post concussion syndrome, prescribed total rest and sent for a scan.

On day 13 had MRI scan and was referred to Neurologist. awaiting appt. Did not understand my MRI report 'Moderate cerebellar tonsillar descent with left being worse than the right' and when i posted it on an ' Ask a doctor' site, 2 doctors suggested my symptoms point to CM.      Oddly they think the blow to the head is a coincidence... but I have not had any health problems before suffering that trauma.  Now I spend most of my day  sleeping , reeling and resting.

Its now day 20. I sleep a lot . Have found a resting position which seems to ease pressure on my head slightly. Sometimes the headache goes down over my neck around my chest. Best time is when I wake up in morning and whilst i am resting. Symtoms heighten as day progresses or as I become more active and walk around, including the cold and numb tingly feeling in left of head and down the left side of the neck. ringing in my ears, tingling in my arms,  unsteadiness and total tremor at times.

Have an appointment with a neurologist in 3 days time so will understand more then.

Would be interested to hear if anyone has experience of cerebellar tonsillar descent as a result of the blow to the head?

And I appreciate ur willingness to help with fund raising, and that u found the Ann Conroy Trust site. I can not give u ne info on those Drs, we do have a few from the UK here that may be able to offer some insights.

Have just found the Ann Conroy trust site as well and will check in there. Whether I am Chiari or not, I intend to do some fundraising to promote research in this area as soon as I can manage that.

Thanks selmaS. That is really interesting. If it is acquired... I seemed to have slipped through the net for immediate initial ER checks.... and all of this is taking ages.

I was initially given the once over in ER and told to go home and rest. Weh ni went back a few days later, they said concussion. When I returned on day 13, they said  they wanted a scan but could not authorise  funding it and send me back to have it requested by my GP.

Am seeing a neurologist privately in a few days and with all these weird symptoms, it is now making me very anxious.

Thank you for your prompt response. Will keep you posted.

Hi...yes, this happened to George Clooney.....http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Chiari-Malformation/Does-George-Clooney-have-chiari/show/1701667

That is a link to a o;d thread on the topic....and I just explained this to  a ne member jefe55

Some times with a blow to the head if u have Chiari which is a malformation of the skull it can trigger symptoms that may have gone unnoticed until this happens....if u r blow to the head causes the tonsils to herniate and cause symptoms but the skull is of "normal" size...if so, this is not Chiari but low lying tonsils....and they  may retract....

As in George Clooney's case he did require surgery....and bcuz he did not have chiari and no related issues he did not have issues with recovery....

U need to find out if it is congenital or acquired....either way the blow to the head can cause symptoms  to flare.
