Chiari 1 running in families

My 4 year old daughter underwent an MRI yesterday to try to explain muscle weakness and severe Dysphagia. It turns out she has a Chiari 1 Malformation. Our Neurologist is unsure if this is the cause of her symptoms as her sister (6) and brother (2) have the same weakness problems and Dysphagia. It will take a few weeks for my other two children to get in for an MRI.  Has anyone heard of Chiari running in families?

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

The research is still being done on if this is genetic, but as Munchies mentioned we have seen many families with several members with the condition, sometimes it is the parent and a child and sometimes it is several children....

It is a wise decision to have all of ur children checked, and get the results from a true chiari specialist...expect u may have to travel to get to one, but it is well worth it.

Ask questions, educate urself the best u can so u will know when u have the right dr,

KNow u r not alone : )

Yea I've seen numerous people with family members with chiari. Doctors try and say not hereditary ... But it clearly is in some cases
