I've taken topamax, amitriptyline, depakote, neurotin, and loritab.

The topamax didn't help and in fact made me feel worse.  I stayed sick while I was on it and the dr took me off of it.  Later on I discovered it is sulfa based.  I am allergic to sulfa.  Apparently either my dr didn't know it was made from sulfa...or didn't care.

The amitriptyline never helped either and it made my neurogenic bladder worse.  I literally could not pee at all by myself when I was on it.  (My wonderful dr just kept upping the dosage)

The depakote doesn't help either, but I'm not sure about the neurotin.  I've only been taking it for about 3 weeks so the jury is still out on that.

The loritab helps me get a few things done during the day.  Otherwise alot of movement would be unbearable.

I've took Vicodin and Topamax. Vicodin made me not care about myself or my family. Topamax didn't seem to help at all.

I'm on quite a high combination of Topamax and Amitriptyline a day. I can't really function too well without them. However many people do not like the side effects that can come with either of these meds.

I found the diamox helped but than they put the shunt in and it basically does the same thing.  Vicodin made me not care it hurt and I could get stuff done.  But everyone is diffrent and u just have to play around with things.

Selma is right that there is no pain med that really touches it...some people get lucky with either Diamox or Topamax though.

Which meds have you tried?  I have a long list of things tried...only one, so far, takes the "edge" off so I can power through my day....Meloxicam (generic for Mobic).  Hope this helps!!

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

Since we r all diff , we r also diff in which meds may or may not work...but for most chiari pain there  is no med that really touches it.

What we need to do is find a way to avoid triggering a flare up....avoid things u know will cause u pain, do things in moderation....

The best advice is to try a med for a long period to make sure u give it time to work...and keep a list of what u tried....
