Disability

Hello everyone! Just wondering. How many apply for disability with social security after having surgery and got approve or deny? I know I'm almost 8 months post surgery but I still don't feel good and I really have more bad days than good days. Please give me you're input...thank you!

Why is 30 a magic number?
My brother in law has cerebral palsy, and he's been on disability ever since he was 18.  (granted, they probably don't see CP as that much of a disability anymore).

Hi. I have absolutely no experience with this. I haven't been able to work my regular career since 2008, after my daughter was born . It entailed at least 12 hours a day walking multiple miles up and down car lots in heels. I remember getting ready for work one morning with my mom on the other end of the phone crying, saying I just couldn't do it anymore. 70 hours a week, in the car buisness where they are tough on women, to prove their way...and I had done so. I was a CFM. Customer Funding Manager..and there waas only one of me. The words customer funding meant poor....people who could not afford a car...had low income...had tried every other alternative....people who needed a vehicle but had horrible credit...etc..I loved my job, but I just couldn't do it anymore. This was before my DX. I loved seeing people get the help they needed to get their lives back on track...and now I am on the  other end....and was told by 3 lawyers to not even try to apply until I was 30. They wouldnt take my case.    So, that is where I stand waiting in the wings....I am 28, with 3 beautiful kiddos and a handsome hubby and great puppy :) However, I can't even do that job anymore....I should have started the process 2 years ago when I thought it was necessary...I am 6 weeks post op...and I am being told once again by lawayers....surgery or not....not to waste my time until I am 30. But I am not going to wait....I have been fighting for two years...and one day closer each day. My point like others say...DON'T GIVE UP...on something you deserve !!! Best wishes to you !!! You will be in my prayers !

Oh ya, I am having second surgery this aug, so maybe that will help with my claim, not sure. First surgery was not done by specialist. I am only 32, I just want my life back. We all do. The process is long for disability and the state paid drs can be real a holes. I actually left one appt in tears. But hang in there. Its worth it. If alcoholics and depressed people can get disability, why cant we. It angers me so.

Hi my name is Dana. I had first surgery in aug 2011. Tried to go back to worj end of nov. Couldnt hang. So I decided to apply for disability. I do not pay my lawyer unless I win. I was denied a few months back, may I think. My lawyer is appealing it. Papers say it could take anywhere from date of appeal to 30 months. But I am fighting, not giving up. You have to be off work for 12 months so if you apply they will go from your date of surgery as long as youve been off. So try it. Dont wait. Ive tried to go back to my job at least 3 times now and I cannot do it. My lawyer sayss that it looks like ive tried and I dont want to be on disability, but I need it. I am awaitin a court hearing. It will be good to actually tell my side to the person deciding. Good luck

When I applied, the blind received disability immediately.  I would not want to be blind, but I remember thinking--is this really the worst thing that can happen to someone?  When I went to Vocational Rehab, to see if there was *some* way to make money, the counselor was blind.  He said I was too sick to work, so forget it.  He told me to go ask a church for help; I did, and they did not.

The only thing worse than being very poor, is being very poor and very sick.

After having 4 surgeries and recommendation from the NS not to go back to work I applied for disablility in June 2011.  I was denied and went to attorney after the denial and I am not waiting for a hearing.  During this time I had my NS even write saying to apply for SSI and I am hoping this will help.  My letter from SS said it could take up to 20 months, but you do receive the back pay.  As for my sister who has biopolar she was approved within 6 months.  I don't know what the difference is, but as my attorney states there are so many people applying it is like pulling your name out of a hat.  I'll wait and be patent.  I know in my heart I can't work anymore and I worked for 33 yrs, so as my attorney said.  I'm just asking for some of my money back.  Wish you the best in this, but if you decide to apply I suggest you do this now because as you see it is a long process.

I do get exhausted real quick and can't walk too far sit for too long. I am constantly in pain. I have changed Doctors since May because my surgeon was not making me to comfort anymore. Since he kept changing my recovery time from 6 weeks, 6 months and the last time I saw him he said 9mos to a year. The surgeon that I when to get a second opinion right away told me that it would take 1-2 years and depending on the patient. But well I'm still under further testing and physical therapy. Well I'm desperately waiting on my claim since I have not work since 11/11.

Unless the procedure has changed, you can't get an attorney for free until the hearing.  There are people who can help you through the process, but I don't know how effective or expensive they are.  Some people are so sick that they have no choice but to hire someone.
Some people are so poor they have no choice too.

It usually takes 2 years to get to the hearing date.

Thank you Selma I waited to file until February since I was expected to be back to work after 6 weeks and well I realize that I was not even myself yet... I did not get an attorney but it's been 5 months now and nothing yet. I will take you're advice and contact an attorney. Thanks again.

I was Dx'd with chronic fatigue syndrome--maybe blessing in disguise-- so have been on SSDI since 1998.  I fell asleep during my own hearing!

Do you understand the process, and do you have your doctor(s) support?  Also, you have to have the stamina to fight; they want to wear you down so you give up.
