Do the neck muscles get cut during decompression surgery?

So exactly as I titled it! Does the neurosurgeon have to cut the neck muscles to reach the skull where they remove the piece?

To my kniwledge after 2 surgeries, yes the muscle are cut and moved aside. Another reason healing takes so much time and rest, yet we need to do lil neck exercises daily after.
